Question: My son just had cast removed after plate and screw post 4 metatarsal fx and great toe fx and orif.
He has fallen and again has a hematoma and swelling above area of plate and pins. Would this area be easily refractured ? have done the rice care and was waiting till tomorrow to get xray due to swelling he has pain meds from before. Is it ok to wait, we can see his ortho tomorrow but not today

Brief Answer:
It is okay to wait and see him tomorrow!

Detailed Answer:
Hi and thank you so much for this query.

I am so sorry to hear about this fall soon after the accident. The bone is still fragile and he can easily refracture but not necessarily so. I will suggest that you simply go on with pain management today and see the doctor tomorrow for a control x-ray and management. Continue with the RICE guidelines and his pain meds from earlier visits. Tomorrow is good enough and there is no emergency that warrants the ER right away.

I hope this helps. I wish you well. Feel free to ask for more information and clarifications if need be. Above all, thanks for using our services.
