Question: my son is 5.9 yr old, he has been having fever over 100 for past day, we gave him calpol 250 due to which the fever would go but return. his last dose was given this morning at 9 when temperature was 102, then at around 5 PM the temp was 104, I have just given him Meftal P and doing wet cloth aplication. He has no pains or irritation, obviously eating less, tried to poop but was constipated so gave up.
My concern is what if his fever does not come down , should i wait till morning or admit him to hospital as it is sunday today. what else can I do to get the temp down, can i repeat dose after 6 hrs?
v v concerned and nervous!! Please help !!

Brief Answer:
Give paracetamol in appropriate dosage and monitor temperature

Detailed Answer:
Hello

Thanks for asking on this platform

I can understand your concern.I won't get overly worried since fever is there for past one day only.
The dose of paracetamol is 60 mg/kg/day and it can be given at an interval of 4-8 hours in divided dosage.Sponging also helps in bringing down the temperature. In pediatric age group the dosing depends on the weight. The average weight of 6 years old child is about 20 kgs. So if you are giving paracetamol(calpol 250) you may give 4 ml at 4 hour interval. If fever persists even with this dosing you may give mefenemic acid(the dose is 25 mg/kg/day in three divided dosage).
The most common cause of fever in this age is some viral infection. In viral infection fever remains very high during initial 2-3 days.Heat exaution is another common cause due to high environmental temperature.Poor appetite is common during fever.Try to give plenty of water as it helps in bringing down the temperature and also prevents dehydration.
I suggest you to give paracetamol in above mentioned dosage and if you find any other significant associated symptoms like vomiting/lethargy/irritability consult emergency room for evaluation and management.

I hope this helps.
I shall be glad to answer if you have any more queries.
Wishing for your child's speedy recovery.

thanks for the reply Dr. XXXXXXX

we gave him maftal-p 5ml, his fever came dowm. but it has returned today, we visited a doctor who says it is viral, advised to continue with maftal or calpol. if fever persists till tomorrow then he will have to go on antibiotic course.

for all the parents if you child only has fever and no vomiting or loose motion, then just administor calpol or maftal or crocin along with wet cloth application.

doctor, who can we get kids to eat healthy? what is healthy food for kids?

Thanks,
doctor
