Dear
Thanks for contacting Ayurveda with your health concern and after reviewing your case I'm of the following opinion:

1. Since both cortisol and thyroid are hormonal problem do let me know about the symptoms [earlier],present values and what medicines were prescribed for the same?

2. Go for a Dental checkup since if after examination tooth is normal, one can think of referred pain like trigeminal neuralgia and if it is in left lower molar pain one should always remember angina

3. since there is/was a time period adjusting to loss of your loved one, do let me know whether there is:
. depression?
. generalized anxiety?
. panic attacks?
. are there more of emotional or physical symptoms?

4. Do revert back with your concern(s) till then dietary Regime and lifestyle management is initiated from my side according to “manovaha srotas vyadhi”

i. Avoid: excess physical/mental exertion, sun exposure, corrylium, smoking, errhine therapy, betel leaves, gruel, soup, day time sleeping, garlic, ginger, onion, spicy-heavy- junk food, mustard oil, pickles, alcohol, pepper, spices, rye, anger, grief, fear, late night waking.

ii. Take: mint, coriander, tomato, and cumin, plenty of water, vitamins and mineral supplements, apple, banana, grapes, dates

5. Lemon juice mixed with sugar in a glass of water helps release stress removing hormones from the body and bring mind at peace/rest. And eat 2 spoons coriander [Dhaniya] seeds with 2 spoons of sugar candy

6. Apple, almond, banana, broccoli, cantaloupe, melon, carrot, cashew nut, corn, cauliflower, grapes, guava, lemon, XXXXXXX orange, pineapple, soybean, spinach have anti oxidant and detoxifying properties so take them in plenty.

Thank you for your reply and advice/Guidance.
Answers to your questions and more information about me.

1. I was on 100mg Levothyroxine and I switched to better life style and healthier eating. Also came off as I felt worse for a good year and blood test results showed my dose did not need an increase. Changing my lifestyle and eating more healthy did help. My family Dr put me on these because my blood test showed I had Underactive Thyroid. Also I was complaining of tiredness.

2. My stinging and burning pain is back of my head not my face. I thought maybe connection with dental issues because I do tense up a lot and find that after fresh air and a nice walk lots of these symptoms and what I feel vanish. I am generally a tense and nervous person.

3. As said I am generally a tense and nervous person. I may have depression. I raised my 20 year old son by myself with support from my elderly father. Things went on a decline in 2011 when added pressure was put on me. (That was year I got diagnosed with Underactive Thyroid).
During 2011 my mum showed signs of memory loss. I cared for her until 2013 when she went into a care home. In 2015 my dad was in hospital as he had a stroke/seizure and while he was in hospital my mum died. When my dad came out of hospital I was then my dads full time carer.
Earlier this year after my dad had a hip replacement I was with my dad 24/7 until he had to go back in and lots of things going on with my dad. When he came out he was having bed care from me 24/7 and visiting carers. He was on end of life. I watched the dying process. He died end of XXXXXXX From day before my dads funeral which was 3 weeks after my grief similar to depression. I am not motivated to do much.

I am currently meant to be back/looking for full time work/ doing full time work. I am not ready. I am struggling looking after myself. Having lots of unhealthy food. Ready meals and junk food.
I am seeing my family Dr this week for note/letter to say I am not ready for full time work. I have good days and I have bad days.

4. I am currently taking in supplements a Thyroid support formula with Iodine and Selenium, but been told by friend Ashwaganda is better.?
Am also taking Vitamin D3 and B vitamin complex. I started going for a daily walk and feeling better.

4,5,6. Thank you for this I will start and revert back to this.

1. You have not told about cortisol problem?
2. As you have switched to natural methods for underactive thyroid, please remember
i. There is no substitute of hormone in any –pathy thus check with thyroid values every 3 months
ii. Take: iodized salt,sea food,garlic,onions,meat,chicken,salmon,tuna,whole unrefined grains,dairy products,banana,egg,low fat milk,mushrooms,guava, carrots,cucumber,black beans,navy beans,red kidney beans,split beans,black pepper,cinnamon,turmeric,mint,coriander,apple,apricots,olive oil,cherries,dates, kiwi,papaya,pineapple,brown rice,prunes,coconut oil
. Avoid: linseed/flax oil,peanuts,walnuts XXXXXXX turnip,green mustard,mustard, cauliflower, peaches, coffee,spinach,cabbage,soybean,canola oil,radish,sweet potato, white bread, white flour, junk food, pears,millet

3. As far as depression is concerned
i. you should consult with your health care professional for CBT [cognitive behavioral therapy] to identify and counteract negative thoughts.
ii. practice relaxation techniques like yoga, meditation, Pranayam [anulom vilom] which will strengthen the relaxation response of body as opposite to stress response.
iii. Before assuming these attacks to be due to anxiety or depression make sure you have ruled out medical conditions like overactive thyroid, low blood glucose, use of excess caffeine, cocaine, amphetamines or heart problem
iv. Evaluation by a Psychiatrist is necessary.
v. You can practice: bhujangasana, halasana, paschimottasana, sarvangasana, shalabhasana, shavasana and vakrasana and pranayamas like bhastrika and kapalbhati

4. As Ashwagandha is an adaptogenic herb it can be used both in over/under active thyroid [by naturally balancing the hormones] as well as in supporting adrenal function by overcoming adrenal fatigue and chronic stress

5. take your vitamin supplements as such.

Thank you for your reply.

I have been quite detailed in my last reply to you.
As for my cortisol level I scored high on my last one.
It's clearly obvious I will score high again as I am under a lot of stress currently and am having lots of anxiety.
I am clearly still in my grieving processes. It's still early days. It's usually at least a year with the 5 stages of grief. I am borderline what's known as complicated grief which is similar to depression.
I have online therapy discussions for past year with a professional in this kind of area. No negative thoughts and if any arise I've been taught how to deal with them.

As for my thyroid. When I switched to healthier life style. Eating healthier and started to exercise I did lose weight. Feeding myself rubbish it's natural I will feel rubbish. I've only been back on my supplements for 2 weeks. Only recently started getting back into a routine.

I am getting retested soon. I am seeing my Family DR tomorrow (Tuesday) to arrange this. Only thing I forgot to say to you with my health is for years I've suffered with IBS.

Regards.

Thanks for reverting back

1. If you believe your cortisol level could be high due to ongoing STRESS, one can try following natural measures like

. low carbohydrate diet [low glycemic index], avoid processed sugar/flour.
. vitamin B5 and folic acid help reduce cortisol level [beans, fish, whole grains, peas, sunflower seeds, melon, oranges] and Vitamin C [citrus fruits]
. Exercise regularly [helps in release of endorphins] the feel good hormone
. Herbs like holy XXXXXXX Ashwagandha,Ginseng, stresscare [Himalaya], stressan [Sandu Pharma] helps in reducing cortisol and fight stress in natural way.

2.     Since one of the treatment option in IBS is with anti depressant so make sure the drugs have not do anything with depression as ADR [adverse drug reaction] or since IBS was there exclude malabsorption [particularly of vitamin B12] which can cause depression, anxiety, fatigue, psychosis.
