Suggest Remedies For Bruises At The Site Of Injection

default
Posted on Fri, 7 Oct 2016
Question: I recently had a migraine when to my local clinic and was given an injection there. The injection site has a bruise, then to the hospital that night and was given an IV for meds. The 1st IV my vein blow and they stated another IV. They were able to give me meds and I left feeling better. The next day I took the gauze off and revealed a 2 huge bruises. My question is this, Why do my BRUISES feel like they are covered in glass? Feel like I was rolling around in fiber glass. All my Bruise feel this was, the shot site the IV sites and a bruise on my leg from hitting myself 3 nights ago.

Brief Answer:
most likely fluid accumulation, it's a part of healing process only..

Detailed Answer:
Hello XXXX, Welcome to HCM,
I've gone through your query and understand your concern,

As per your description, the first I.V actually didn't penetrate the vein properly (most of the time they accidentally go through and through the vein and penetrate deep fascia and muscle plain thus so much swelling and pain happen)..

It seems the second I.V. was properly placed..

Yes it's normal healing process of the body after any injury, as there's seepage of fluids and colloidal materials underneath the skin around the bruise followed by slow absorption of it after 48-72 hrs (depending on the overall nature of the wound) as well as slow dissolve of the surrounding blood clots and hematoma (which may appear to you as reddish-black/grey/blue/yellow color)..

Yes, the fiber-glass like feeling is most likely due to increased skin turgor over the area due to those fluid and colloidal substance accumulation..additionally you can also notice the area as excessive shiny compared to other parts of the body..

Don't worry about it, it's the body's natural healing process, you can simply apply Ice-compression over it multiple times a day for the next two-three days and observe.. Do keep the area clean and apply antiseptic scrubs (eg. Betadine) daily..

However, I'd really appreciate if you can please take a few snapshots of the area and upload it here so that I can take a closer look at it..

You can simply upload/attach them at the reports section or even e-mail them to YYYY@YYYY by keeping the Subject as ATTN:Dr Arnab and I'll receive them..

Let me know if there's any further queries..

Brief Answer:
follow as already advised along with the following advises..

Detailed Answer:
Hello XXXX, Welcome back,
Thanks for following up with this vital details,

I've reviewed the pictures, they do appear to be bruises only, please continue applying the ice compression over the area as I've already mentioned..keep the area clean with antiseptic scrubs..

Now that you've mentioned such a vital history, let me inform you that skin rashes after Plaquenil therapy, though rare but can happen..However considering the I.V. site bruise, it still appears to be deep puncture and surrounding site local reaction..

In fact, all those fiber glass like feeling, can be attributed to lupus only, but if it's particularly experienced only over the I.V. reaction site then it's unlikely..

Do keep an eye on the rashes and if you don't notice any significant improvement within next 48-72 hrs, I'd strongly recommend for a thorough check-up of the area followed by a complete Coagulation profile (Hemogram, peripheral blood smear, PT/INR, aPTT, fibrinogen level) and/ repeat Lupus Panel evaluation by your doctor..

Let me know how you stay in the due course..

Take Care
Kind Regards
