Posted on Mon, 13 Nov 2017
Question: Looking for a second opinion please. I turned 40 in February. I have taken triphasic birth contril pills for 20 years with no issues. In the past 5 months, l've experienced anxiety in the premenstural/menstrual stage in 3 of the 5 cycles. I do not have issues with anxiety in general. My GYN is switching me to a monophasic pill (OrthoCyclen). Could changres in my body chemistry as I age result in having these new problems with triphasic pills?

Brief Answer:
Better to switch

Detailed Answer:
Hi dear,
I have gone through your question and understand the concerns.
Triphasic pills can cause mood swings, anxiety and panic attacks.
With age, the mood chamges are more pronounced.
It is always better to switch to lower dose of exogenous hormonal pills to reduce these effects.
It is advisable to switch over.
Hope you found the answer helpful.

Thank you for your reassurin response! Can I be in perimenopause? Should I consider an anti-anxiety perscription or just wait to see how the monophasic pill works?g

Brief Answer:
Try monophasic pills first

Detailed Answer:
Hi dear,
I am happy to have helped you.
Yes, you can be in perimenopausal phase.
You can try the monophasic pills for 2-3 months before going for anti-anxiety medications.
