Question: Hello,my name is XXXXXXX Huffman Sr. I am 66 yrs old. Recently I called 911 because I couldn't breath. I have had copd for some time, and over the last two years, roughly, I have had these attacks where if I do too much walking or waving or using my arms etc. I get these attacks where I can't get enough air. The last two have been so bad I can't fight them off with my inhalers, and the last one my home nebulizer wasn't doing it either. That's when my family called 911. ( the last one.). When all was said and done, I spent 4 days in XXXXXXX Methodist Hospital , in XXXXXXX Ohio. Where I live. I was diagnosed with Acute Bronchitis. They gave me Levofloxacin and prednisone. I also had scripts for these to take home and use for 5 days. My question is , I have had a couple minor attacks since then. Is there anything else that can be done to curb these attacks ? It is getting scary, and my family is beside themselves for answers. I'm schedualed to start seeing a Pulmonoligist in May... If I live that long. Can you help ? I do see my Doctor May 14,2017.

Brief Answer:
Along with inhalers and drugs, you need pulmonary rehabilitation also.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for your question on Healthcare Magic.
I can understand your concern.
Most common cause for COPD worsening is infection.
So we need to control the infection or prevent them.
And this I the reason why adult pulmonary vaccines are mainstay of treatment for COPD.
There are two commonly used vaccines for COPD patients.
1. Pneumococcal
2. Influenza
So ask your current doctor about vaccination.
Your inhalers are appropriate so continue them.
Along with vaccines, deep breathing exercises and chest physiotherapy are also beneficial in reducing symptoms.
All these come under Pulmonary rehabilitation.
So discuss about this with your current doctor an start them.
Oral N acetyl cystine (NAC) is also beneficial in COPD patients. Also discuss about it.
Don't worry, you will be alright with all these.
Hope I have solved your query. I will be happy to help you further. Wish you good health. Thanks.
