Thank you for replying.

I have a slight swelling / small lump in my neck. My MD believes it is Thyroid related
and is keen to do a BIOPSY. I do not share the idea of having a BIOPSY. Will you kindly let me know a BIOPSY is the only way to go. Wondering whether there is another way to go instead of a BIOPSY

Thanking you in anticipation,

Brief Answer:
fine needle aspiration (FNA)

Detailed Answer:
Hello and thanks for the follow up.
It is standard procedure to do a fine needle aspiration on all thyroid nodules. A fine needle aspiration is less invasive than an open biopsy and usually gives an answer. The problem is that 5-10% of thyroid nodules are cancer. There is no real way to tell this without the fine needle aspiration.
Thyroid cancer is very treatable but as you might imagine, gets less treatable the longer it persists without a diagnosis.
In a fine needle aspiration a small needle is inserted into the nodule, often under ultrasound guidance, and cells are removed by the syringe. The sample is sent to the lab for pathology.
If you are opposed to any testing by biopsy or FNA, then you could ask your doctor to do a thyroid scan. In this test radioactive iodine is injected into a vein and the thyroid is imaged by a scan that looks for the iodine. Hot nodules take up a lot of the radioactive iodine and are usually not cancer. Cold nodules do not take up the iodine and are often cancer. If you have a cold nodule, then you would still need a biopsy, but if it is a hot nodule you may be able to avoid it.
I wish you the best,
Dr. Robinson
