Suggest Other Medications For Back Pain

default
Posted on Fri, 13 Mar 2015
Question: Hi, I am currently taking OPANA ER 40 mg twice a day for back pain. I have been fortunate enough to have had state insurance which has covered it in full. Due to some paperwork issues, my insurance is not active this month. As you know, without it I will have some pretty nasty withdrawal symptoms, not to mention no pain relief. I, of course, have the option of paying out of pocket. Unfortunately OPANA is quite expensive. I wondered if you could possibly suggest something that might be comparable, or even just keep me from withdrawal that is less expensive. You may be wondering why I don't just ask my prescriber. The problem is that I go to a pain management clinic and have several prescribers. I have spoken to the clinic and explained my dilemma and they just insist that I wait until I come in for my appointment to address the issue. I need to know before my appointment what some possibilities are so that I can find out the prices of the possible alternatives to see what is most affordable. If I wait until the appointment, I will have no idea whether I can afford the prescription they give me. If I can't afford it then I will have the hassles of trying to get in for another appointment to get another prescription before I run out of what I have etc. etc. I think you see my dilemma. I really need to know what some possible alternatives are BEFORE the appointment. They don't seem to understand or want to work with me on this. I am very nervous about withdrawal. I know it is not a pleasant thing to go through and it seems to me that if I could get some advice before my appointment the problem could be avoided altogether. I'm hoping that you might have some suggestions. I eagerly await your opinions/suggestions. Thank you very much for listening (reading). XXXXXXX

Brief Answer:
You can shift to Tramadol

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Opioid dependence is common problem seen in pain management practice. It can be treated with many drugs. Safest of them is Tramadol. It is very cheap also and can be available easily. It does not causes any dependence.
If symptoms are not controlled with this than Buprenorphine can be added.
Some doctors prefer Suboxone for this. This should be taken till withdrawal symptoms are stabilized and than patient should be advised to take Tramadol.
Tramadol can be taken in both tablet and injection form.Only known side effect is vomiting.
I hope this answer will be useful for you. Let me know if there is any other followup questions.
Thanks
