Question: Hi,
Im a 35 female . Just gave birth to my third baby 4 months ago. I had HBP during labour and after delivery 150/100 . So i was given medication for that . First it was 2 tablets of labetalol(100mg) 3 times a day . They weaned me off them gradually. Now im on 2 tablets a day . I check my bp at home bcas it tends to go high when im at the clinic and it ranges from 120/80 to 115/72 . My last appt with the dr she asked me to stop them for a week and to check my BP . Then she said figures like this doesnt indicate that my bp is normal . She said if its back to normal then it should be 90/60 !!! Now ofcourse im not confident in stopping my pills bcas im scared . So today i checked my bp and it was 127/85. Can youn pls explain to me if this is correct or not and what will be your advice ? Thanks

Hello!

Thank you for asking on HCM!

I understand your concern and would explain that high blood pressure can persist after giving birth.

The high blood pressure values indoctodoctor's office could be explained by the anxiety and fair related to the doctor consult and the hospital environment. This is a common syndrome called White coat syndrome and it is not harmful.

Anyway I would recommend taking reduced doses of your antihypertensive therapy until six months after birth.

It is not necessary to have low BP values such as 90/60mm Hg.

What were your blood pressure values before pregnancy?

I recommend you to closely monitor your blood pressure different times during the day and refer those values to your doctor.

After 6 months from birth I would recommend a further reduce in your antihypertensive drugs doses and carefully monitor your blood pressure.

If your blood pressure is below 120/75 without drugs there is no need for any therapy.

Meanwhile I would recommend you to modify your diet ( reduce salt and caffeine intake) and reduce your weight.

Hope to have been helpful!

Best wishes!

Hello again!

As your previous blood pressure has been at these values, the return to these values after stopping antihypertensive therapy, would indicate that there is no need for antihypertensive therapy.

I would not recommend values like 90/60 which are too low in your condition.

Meanwhile I would recommend continuing low doses of antihypertensive drugs until the sixth month after birth as there is a potential risk of high blood pressure during this period.

Hope to have been helpful!

Greetings!
