My hair is thinning and breaks off everytime I bathe. I lose around 30-40 strands each time. Few months ago I took treatment with Dr XXXXXXX Shamsher, the whole treatment was waste of money. I tried some hair oils what they show on TV, still no use. Can you please suggest me a medicine or name of a good trichologist in Bangalore?

Brief Answer: Can you elaborate the treatment you been on? Detailed Answer: Hi, I understand hair fall is concerning you. I see that you have met a doctor and tried treatment. Before I could give you my opinion, I would like to know if you underwent evaluation before taking those treatment. If so, what tests were done and its results. It would also be better if you can list the treatment given by your doctor. The treatment was some combination of oral medicines given by the doctor. I didn't buy any medicine outside. The clinic themselves provide medicines. The only external product was to use Dove shampoo. The medicines worked as long as I took them after that the hair-fall stared. I once took a serum ferritin test. The result turned out to be good. My life style choices as pretty simple. I don't smoke or drink. I eat simple south Indian food(veg and non veg), my sleep timings are from 6am to 2pm. I have asthma and I'm on any fixed medicine for it. I wash my hair on alternate days using Dove shampoo.

Brief Answer: Multifactorial treatment.... Detailed Answer: Dear XXXXXXX As I explained in my previous reply, hair fall is linked to multiple factors that influence hair growth. I would list of some of those issues which you can overcome. 1. I see you sleep at odd hours (may be due to a different work shift). Presuming you are sleeping regularly at this hour and having a healthy balanced diet, your life style seems fairly good. If you are missing fruits, vegetables and protein rich diet, make sure, you add them. A good protein diet along with vitamins and minerals are essential for hair nourishment. Add cereals, pulses, milk, nuts, beans and root vegetables along with at least one fruit a day. 2. Make sure you are stress free. If you are dealing with extreme stress (family or work) add stress combating methods - exercise, yoga, meditation and so on. They help in the long run to treat hair issues. 3. A good shampoo that takes care of dandruff is essential in the treatment of hair fall problems. If you notice dandruff issues despite Dove shampoos, you can consider changing it to medicated formulas. 4. If hair fall is worsening with time, you can add supplements to your diet. Protein supplements such as proteinex and vitamin supplements such as biotin forte every day is what I recommend my patients. 5. Hair is very brittle when it is wet. Avoid wiping hair with a towel or combing hair immediately after bath. Let it air dry before combing. 6. Hair dyes and hair coloring from certain chemicals can be detrimental to hair roots. Restrict them. 7. It would be worthwhile to test for anemia and thyroid problems as they can cause hair fall issues. Further testing to look at testosterone levels may be done after discussing with a physician. 8. If these changes don't help, you can consult a dermatologist or trichologist to study hair samples under microscope to determine if there is any other underlying condition. 9. Lastly, medications such as minoxidil or finasteride may be used under dermatologist care if the aforementioned options fail to provide relief. Hope this helps. Let me know if you need clarifications. Regards
