Suggest Medication For Diabetes

default
Posted on Sat, 24 Jan 2015
Question: I'm diabetic since the last 10 years or so. The doctor has been experimenting by prescribing medicine one after the other to examine their effectiveness. One such medicine was jalra M 50/500 which my body refused to accept. Now the doc has prescribed Trajentra before breakfast and Glycomet 1 gm before dinner. Today I've checked my blood sugar (one touch) and found fasting-120 and Pp-189. Should I continue with this or take glycomet both times? Please advise.

Brief Answer:
Sir, Continue the same medications now with lifestyle modifications....

Detailed Answer:
Dear friend, i understand and appreciate your concern.

You now continue the same medications as your doctor advised. No need to change now. Your fasting and postprondial sugar levels are ok now. But try to get it done in good lab once rather than in glucometer.

You need to get your lipid profile, microalbuminuria and HbA1c checked. your medications are sufficient for time being if you are committed for lifestyle changes.

Stay away from all the fast / processed / and fried food stuffs. Divide your meal in to 4-5 parts per day whenever you feel hungry. Add more of fiber rich food stuffs like green leafy vegetables, raw fruits (not juices), eat very less of carbohydrates (rice) avoid sugar completely. Take Millets and breads prepared out of it like ragi. They are very good sources of minerals which are very important in maintaining sugar levels. Do take more of proteins like egg white. Say no to oils and cholesterol rich food stuffs. You can take fish (boiled) but chicken (without skin) rarely. Based on this you prepare your diet chart and strictly follow it.

Do exercise- walk at least half an hour to one hour a day, try and practice yoga and pranayama, some aasanas are very easy to practice and also beneficial. Quit smoking and reduce your alcohol intake. Moreover, beet root juice (inorganic nitrate), karela-jamun juice, olive leaves, garlic, turmeric, tamarind also have proven benefits.

If you can follow these (have to!!) you can definitely see difference yourself by the time you have your next blood investigation report in two months .. later we can decide to change over to insulin or increase the dose .. do contact us .
