Brief Answer: Treatment would depend on the cause Detailed Answer: Dear Sir, We need to know the reason for swelling in her legs. Once we know the reason , we may treat it. She is a 82 year old female. Tell us if she has any medical illness. Common causes for swelling in legs are : 1. Congestive Heart Failure 2. Hypoalbuminemia due to Liver Disease or Kidney disease 3. Hypothyroidism 4. Local Causes like Cellulitis, Deep Vein Thrombosis, Venous insufficiency. We need to know, since when she is having this swelling, How it started? What is her blood pressure. Any other chronic illness like diabetes, hypertension. Any abdominal swelling / Fluid (ascitis) Any swelling on face / peri orbital area. Also, get her tested Hemogram, Kidney Function Test, Liver Function Test, Urine for Albumin, ECG, TSH. If you have the reports, please attach. See, the treatment totally depends on the cause, a low dose diuretic may be added if Blood Pressure permits for symptomatic relief. Wish her a speedy recovery.
