Posted on Mon, 3 Oct 2016
Question: Hi

I have given 5 ml taxim o forte drops to my daughter who is 4 years old and weighs 20kg. Is this dosage fine? The reason why i am asking is that the doctor prescribed 5ml of taxim o 100 syrup but the chemist gave me the drops and I was unaware.

Please can someone guide me.

Appreciate your help.

Thanks

Brief Answer:
Nothing will happen - Don't worry

Detailed Answer:
Hi... nothing will happen. Skip the next dose, and give half the suggested dose if plain Taxim-O is not available.

Thanks Mr XXXXXXX I must say that I had to write taxim o drops only... Don't know how forte got added on it's own. I have given 5ml of taxim o drops thats around 125mg of cefixime I assume.

Shall I give crocin DS along with this to get rid of the fever?

Her fever is around 102 and it's only on the face, hands + chest.

Just to let you know that typhoid and dengue blood tests are negative. Haemogoram shows neutrophilia.

Appreciate your help.

Brief Answer:
Looks like viral illness - only Paracetamol will do

Detailed Answer:
Hi... even if it is TAXIM-O drops you have given a less than normal dose only for your kid, so do not worry. I suggest to stop antibiotic and start giving only Paracetamol for symptomatic treatment.

I will suggest you how are viral illness behaves so that you will be more confident. 95% of children's illnesses are viral in origin, which does not require antibiotic at all.

Fever of few days without any localizing signs could as well a viral illness. Usually rather than fever, what is more important is the activity of the child, in between 2 fever episodes on the same day. If the kid is active and playing around when there is no fever, it is probably viral illness and it doesn't require antibiotics at all. Once viral fever comes it will there for 4-7 days. So do not worry about duration if the kid is active.

Paracetamol can be given in the dose of 15mg/kg/dose (maximum ceiling dose of 500mg) every 4-6th hourly that too only if fever is more than 100F. I suggest not using combination medicines for fever, especially with Paracetamol.

You can give Crocin DS 6 ml every 4 hour 6 hourly if fever is more than hundred degrees Fahrenheit.
