Posted on Tue, 8 Apr 2014
Question: Hi! My husband has been diagnosed diverticulitis and the doctor is banning many regular foods, like eggs, which have been part of his daily diet as a Spaniard. Why can't he eats eggs or ham, or bread not gluten free? He's lost a lot of weight. thank you very much for your answer.

Brief Answer: Restricted foods only for the acute stage.... Detailed Answer: Hi, I have gone through the medical history of your husband and understood your concerns. I have also gone through the uploaded reports and noticed acute diverticulitis in your CT-scan of the abdomen. Everything else is normal. As your husband has been diagnosed with acute diverticulitis, this explains why his doctor banned many regular foods. Please bare in mind that at the acute phase, patients with diverticulitis are advised to follow a restricted diet where liquids, soups are the main components. After this first stage will be over, gradually, his doctor will allow to eat his regular foods again. Do not worry about losing weight, he will be fine as long as the symptoms will be reversed. Feel free to ask me other questions you might have regarding your husband health condition! I'd be happy to assist you further! Wishing fast recovery to your husband! Dr.Klerida

Thank you very much, Dr.Shehu. Now I want to ask you exactly what are the main foods my husband may eat so that he gains a little weight. You see, this diet has been designed by a naturopath and my husband has never been a vegetarian. His regular doctor (who, btw, was his student at the XXXXXXX Sc Fac at University of PR thirty yrs. ago) knows he went to the naturopath because he doesn't want to go to a hospital, due to his age. His regular doctor prescribed antibiotics for ten days in January. He was feeling better, but then, in February, again came fever and that low stomach pain. The naturopath blamed the antibiotics and now he's taking probiotics, along with some prescribed herb preparations. However, I understand his acute state, and still be strict with the diet. Thank you again! God bless you!

Brief Answer: Specific foods he can eat.... Detailed Answer: Hi back, Thank you for following up. If the regular doctor prescribed antibiotics for 10 days in January, I suppose that time your husband has had the attack episode then. It is needed to put your colon at rest in order to get healed. It is necessary to avoid those foods that can increase bowel movements (dairies, gluten, etc.). That's why low fiber/high liquids diet is recommended. Initially, he can have: - plenty of water - broth - fruit juices without pulp - ice pops/chips - plain gelatin - tea or can have coffee without added cream If his signs will be improved, and less pain will be felt, he might add following foods to his diet: - fruits: cooked/canned without skin or seeds - non-skinny vegetables, whether canned/cooked - fish/eggs/poultry - low fat yogurt - cheese According to his clinical symptoms, he might also eat bread, wheat products, low-fiber cereals, pasta, etc. He can continue taking probiotics, however, if the fever and stomach pain will persist, send him to hospital as soon as possible as he might need to start another course of antibiotics and further evaluation of his health status. Wish fast recovery! God bless your husband and all of you! Dr.Klerida
