Question: Hello,

My 10 month old daughter is 14 kg in weight. She has been exclusively breastfed for first 6 months and even now, she is not very fond of solids. Thus, doctor told me to cut on feeding and give her more of solids. He told me to introduce packet/cow milk in oats/suji etc. Also, he told me to ass beans and ladies finger in her food to avoid constipation.

Since making these two changes, she has been having stools around 4 times a day. Earlier, it used to be twice and not watery. But now, she has been passing watery stool. So, I stopped giving her outside milk and bhindi. But, today she vomited a lot in the afternoon, but she did not seem to be bothered about it.

Also, she has been having this very tiny red rashes around her mouth, They come and go now and then.

Please can you give me your opinion about any problem which she might be having. I am ensuring safety while making her food and all. But she suddenly seems to be not tolerating her solids well.

Thanks.

here are the details

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for the query.

Your doctor is right, if the child is more fond of solids there is absolutely no problem in giving more solids to child.
Add one food item at a time and start other after 10 to 15 days so that child will get adapted to it easily.

To avoid constipation you can give beans, ladies finger, fruits, high fibre diet like oats and lot of water. (after loose motions are under control).

Also avoid cows milk at least till the child gets one year of age, it will help to relieve constipation also.

Rash around mouth may be due to several reasons, better comment can be done by looking at the picture.

Occasional vomiting in children should not be of concern.

If the child is irritable, has a fever, loose motions which smell foul, not playful, not passing adequate urine then only you have to visit a doctor.

Till then you can give probiotics like econorm XXXXXXX 2 times a day along with sips of oral rehydration solution.

Avoid cows milk, till one year of age.

No need to worry as these are normal episodes (loose motions, vomiting) which often occurs in babies while weaning.

Hope I helped you.

Thank you for your reply.

My baby is not at all fond of solid food. I have tried oats with fruits/suji with fruits, plain boiled khichdi, egg York, fish, etc. She does not seem to like anything.

Is it anyhow harmful if she continues on breastfeed for a majority portion of her food? I have heard it increases immunity and makes baby strong.

Brief Answer:
solids have to be started.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for the query.
Yes, you have heard it right that breast milk increases immunity and makes baby strong, but it is exclusively essential only for first 6 months of life.

After that, your baby should have solids in the diet, and without reducing milk intake there will not be the room for solid food.

Only milk feeding will make your baby anaemic (that is reduced haemoglobin level in the blood) because the milk is a poor source of iron.

So I suggest you to reduce milk and increase solids, also avoid bread, biscuits and give your baby fresh food prepared by yourself at home.

You can also try some appetite stimulant syrups.

Hope I helped you.

you for your reply.

Since yesterday, I am noticing her stools are greenish in color with a little curdly texture. I am not giving her much solids for the past 3/4 days except khichdi in lunch/dinner and one banana. Also, I noticed something like mucus in her stool. She is continuing to pass stool 4/5 times a day.

Should I take her to some doctor? I am skeptical as I do not want her to take antibiotics.

Please suggest.

Brief Answer:
normal

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for the follow up.
It may be due to more foremilk and no hind milk.
Sometimes due to frequent switching from one to other breast baby does not get the hindmilk, which is thicker and satisfies babies hunger.
While some other causes are less transit time in stomach, viral infection etc.
If the baby has fever, watery stool, vomiting then you have to see a doctor.
Till then you can give flora-zn XXXXXXX two times a day for 4 to 5 days.
Hope i helped you.
