Suggest Ayurvedic Treatment For Neurofibromatosis

default
Posted on Mon, 3 Nov 2014
Question: Hello Sir,
My sister has been diagnosed with Neurofibromatosis type 1 almost 11 years back when I showed her in XXXXXXX for severe pain and scoliosis. Doctors told that it is not curable and its cells may or may not increase and also told that operation is very risky. From last 6 months, her illness is becoming life-threatening. We again showed in XXXXXXX but they again told that operation is very risky. I started reading some articles about it and came to know that there is no cure in allopathy for it. We visited the doctors again today and he is not suggesting for operation. Till now, she is on pain-killer tablets and injection which has to be given every 3-4 hours once and her sufferings are increasing everyday. So, I don't see hopes in Allopathy for this.
If Ayurveda has some cure for Neurofibromatosis type 1 and can relieve the pain by systematic treatment, please let me know. If there are clinics nearby XXXXXXX (U.P.) or in XXXXXXX that would be the best for us. We are ok to get the treatment even at other places but its needed very urgently.

My phone numbers are +91-0000 and +91-0000.

Brief Answer:
Neurofibromatosis with Prognosis & Analysis

Detailed Answer:
Dear

Thanks for contacting Ayurveda with your sister health concern.

1. going through her reports [March 2003] she was an old treated case of tuberculosis [both medical as well as surgical] but report on [May 2008] says Neurofibromatosis Type 1 which means the condition developed due to mutation rather than any complication of tuberculosis.

PS. As it is an autosomal genetic disease and since neurofibroma are BENIGN i.e. there is no evidence for malignant transformation, thus these tumors can lead to brief stinging, itching, and pain at the site of origin and usually have psychological impact on the individual's self esteem, and social relations and are only removed when they become symptomatic or if they are growing in size.

2. Since she is suffering from neurofibromatosis, do let me know the present life threatening complications/illness which will help us for better management and prognosis of the disease.

PS. since it is Type 1, which is unilateral thus there will be area of cutaneous and subcutaneous lesions and people with Type 1 mainly develop orthopedic complications [scoliosis and tibial dysplasia in her case]

3. and since curvature of spine would be more than 40 degree it might be the reason of not going for operation. [since more than one surgery is required to treat one complication]

PS. to treat scoliosis one has to correct kyphosis at the same time, which also carries risk of non union and also graft is used from patient own body rather than from another. so as there is/are frequent surgery involved thus carries higher risk.

4. Report on [April 2014] says Schwanomma is there: and patients can develop anywhere in the body, except for the nerve that goes to the ear. and since the tumors can cause severe pain, numbness, tingling, and/or weakness in the toes and fingers do let me know whether there is/are any symptoms seen or visible in her.

PS. In her case it is around urinary bladder and uterus, so is/are there any pathology associated with micturition/menstruation?

5. You have to do some google search to find good Ayurveda clinic/hospitals around XXXXXXX or you can simply find in this platform under 'doctor section'

PS. In Ayurveda, we treat the disease under heading 'Vataj Arbud' and/or 'GRANTHI' Rog. although cure is there but it may not be possible to provide results rapidly. You can ask for prescription medicines like kanchnar guggul, ashwagandha, mahamanjishtha arisht, kaishore guggul, afterwards symptom wise treatment can be added according to individual response.

Hi Sir,

Aligning to above, I have some follow-up discussion/question:
1. Aligning to your point 2, I want to tell that the issue is that she is becoming weaker everyday and is not able to even walk on 80-90% of the time. She has got some swelling in the lower back part and her pain has increased so much that she cannot sleep or lay down properly. Do you have some suggestion what medication in Ayurveda we should give for her. Please let me know the quantity and ratio of herbs etc you recommend.

2. For strengthening the bones and specially back-bone, can you please prescribe some Ayurveda medicine or herbs or syrups and how many times we can give her per day or per week?

3. How much helpful will physiotherapy be, in her case? When you reply to this, please be specific what it will help her in: reducing pain, strengthening muscles or strengthening nervous system?

4. Can you please suggest me some Ayurveda procedures (or therapy) which will be helpful in this case? (Like you told that you treat it under Granthi Rog). We are trying to shift base to XXXXXXX because of logistics issues and with your kind advice, we can discuss with physio-therapist and Ayurveda Centres here to start some sessions for her as per your guidance.

Brief Answer:
Treating Neurofibromatosis under Supervision

Detailed Answer:
Dear

Thanks for reverting back

1. Since neurofibroma develops from nerve roots, those located in spine cause bone erosion and deformities of spine i.e. can affect the spinal cord thereby producing pain & neurological symptoms.
PS. since she is having multiple symptoms it is best to have careful supervision of general physician, neurologist and oncologist.

PS. to relieve her from pain your attending doctor is in better position to resolve the issue, and to bee on the safer side I will advice use of external application:
. fry 250 ml ginger juice in 250 ml of til tail, when 250 ml remains [make sure oil doesn't get burn], filter it after cooling and massage. OR
. Boil 100 gm black pepper powder in 300 ml til tail--- filter, cool and massage OR mix dried ginger in castor oil and massage.

2. Loss of bone is effect of the tumor [erosion of the vertebrae by the spinal fluid, owing to the poor quality of the bone] thus primary treatment is surgical management [which is risky] thus prophylactic treatment for the same is:

a. Calcium intake; 1.0-1.5 g per day [banana, XXXXXXX fruit, grapes, coriander, raisins, milk, green vegetables, lemon, mint, papaya, amla, guava, pineapple, turnip, tomato, apple, orange.

b. Moderate Vitamin D intake: 400-800 IU per day or calcitriol 0.25~g/day
[ carrot, beetroot,spinach,radish,mint,amalaki rasayan,soyabean,cucumber, cabbage,vitamin D fortified: pineapple/yogurt/milk/dry mushroom/banana/ cod liver oil/sunshine.

c. REOSTEO [Himalaya]: 2 tablets twice daily

3. Since I am not aware about the quality of bone: [ there can be thinning of the ribs, significant rotation of the vertebrae, vertebral wedging, and/or erosion of the vertebrae] thus in best interest your attending physician will let you know about the same.

PS. In ayurveda, I won't recommend massage but instead Panchkarma procedure: Baluka Sweda or Nirgundi vashp sweda [because it is not a manipulative procedure but therapeutic procedure as such will help improve tolerance to pain and provide nutrition to muscles]

4. As you are shifting to XXXXXXX consult DR. KRANTHI R VARDHAN [and give him my reference], he will be of good help with medicines and procedures.

PS.
Dr Kranthi's Institute of Ayurvedic Sciences & Research, The XXXXXXX Ayurvedic Care, Speciality Panchakarma Centre,
3-6-101/1, st no: 19, Basheerbagh XXXXXXX

5. I usually reccommnd the following line of manaagement:

i. kanchnaar gugullu: 2
arogyavardhini vati: 1............ with dashmoolarishta 10ml [thrice daily]

. Vridhi vadhika vati 1 with Trifla kshaya 5ml [at bed time]

. use of dashang lepa after fomentation of lump [morning/evening]
