Suggest Anti-diabetic Medication Without The Side Effect Of Liver Dysfunction

default
Posted on Mon, 14 Dec 2015
Question: Are there any diabetic drugs available that do not compromise liver function? I have been on glimepride and it increased my Alt to 93 and Ast to 39. Stopped in January of this year. I started 90 mg of gliclazide on Oct. 6/15 and insulin on Sept. 3/15. The Gliclazide was increased to 120 mg/day and I am now up to 60 units of insulin. This combination has been keeping my blood sugar levels between the normal range. My last blood work on Nov. 9/15 incidates that my alt was 100 and ast was 46.

Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome

I appreciate your concern

Metformin does not cause liver dysfunction nor does it elevate liver enzymes. Pioglitazone drugs very rarely can be associated with liver dysfunction. Sitagliptin leads to liver transaminase elevation in less than 1 % of patients using it. The current combination which you are using is fine. Liver enzymes can be observed for the time being. If they become more than 2/3 rd elevated than normal then the above options can be considered in consultation with your doctor.

Wishing you best of health

Thanks
