default
Posted on Mon, 8 May 2017
Question: Any Ayurvedic or homeopathy Doctor, please answer my question. I have severe heart palpitations that keep me awake. I have been getting insomnia since few months now and I find my palpitations to be high the days I can't sleep. What are the causes of heart palpitations. If I get gassy I get High heart rate, if I have acidity I get them, if I worry I get them, so how can I stop them . Could you also recommend a solution for this problem that will be fit for pregnancy. Also is there any method to stop gas from occurring completely.

Detailed Answer:
Dear
Thanks for contacting Ayurveda with your health concern and after reviewing your case history I'm of the following opinion:

A. For heart palpitations: It will be wise to see a Cardiologist for more detailed examination and necessary investigations like:

- serum T3,T4,TSH to rule out thyrotoxicosis
- ECG & Holter moniter test- to rule out Arrhythmias
- Blood sugar to exclude hypoglycemia
- chest x-ray for left ventricular hypertrophy [auscultation of heart for murmur and heaving apex beat in clinical examination]

. If pulse and heart after examination comes to be normal then palpitations could be due to anxiety/acidity/gas problem and will respond to Ayurveda dietary regime and lifestyle modifications [which will then be explained]

. If tachycardia is due to left ventricular hypertrophy, then this forceful beating is going to persist and you should learn to accept it, till then

. avoid excess of tea/coffeE
. avoid alcohol/smoking
. avoid mental strain
. Since Anxiety is mainly related with Vata thus follow a vata pacifying diet: i.e. AVOID: raw vegetables, soft drinks, pop corns chips, skipping meals, outdoor sports [prefer calming activities], purple-blue-white clothing [instead prefer warm color such as red/orange/green/yellow]
. we do make very good medicine for the same which is result oriented and evidence based along with positive reviews by the patient(s) and the best thing about the drug is that it is purely herbal, AYUSH certified and helps improve levels of stress tolerance [anxiolytic and anti depressant properties] and is safe in pregnancy [I can courier you the medicine] otherwise prescription drugs and procedures available for your problems are: sarpagandha, khus, jatamansi, bramhi, kevada, vacha, tagar, amla, XXXXXXX XXXXXXX ras, mahakalyanak ghrita, manasmitra vatkam, XXXXXXX vati, mann XXXXXXX vati,Ashwagandharishta, sarasvatarishta, stresscom, nasya karma

B. For gas problem: symptomatic approach is as follow:

- eat slowly avoid haste, chew properly and avoid over eating.
- Ask for investigations like:

i. stool for worms
ii. Hb% for anemia
iii. Ultrasonography of gall bladder
iv. sigmoidoscopy/gastroscopy [if indicated]

v. tab gasex 1 thrice daily
. tablet Stressan 1 at bed time
. draksharishta 20ml with equal amount of water after meals.
XXXXXXX vati 2tab
ghandhaka vati 2tab
chitrakadi vati 2tab
with XXXXXXX warm water 3 time a day.
.hingavashtaka churna 3gm with first bite of food alongwith small amount of ghee.
.avoid foods that are rich in oils and fats.these foods are difficult to digest,so they may make the stomach release more acids.
.fibers are necessary in the diet as they help in the digestion.
.after a meal, the body must be given some sort of exercise.
.too much addiction to strong foods such as tea and coffee may cause acidity,
this is also true for other addictions such as smoking and alcohol.
.do not consume sour foods as they already have acidic contents.acidic foods to avoid are pickles, curds, tamarinds, vinegar, etc.

Hello Doctor,
Thank you for your response. The medicines for gas , can they be taken during pregnancy. I am a vegetarian , never smoked , never taken alcohol, never taken taken coffee or tea, female of 30 years. I drink 1 glass of milk daily though. Since childhood I have had constipation and for that I used to take Kayam churna but as that cannot be taken in pregnancy I would like some alternatives. I can live with constipation but lack of sleep due to heart palpitations is a problem for me. Eating hing I.e asafoetida and probiotics which is now added in yoghurts keeps me awake for days as it increases my heart palpitations severely. I constantly fart non stop for a day or 2 if I consume hing or probiotics by mistake.what could be the cause for that. It becomes difficult if I travel and have to eat outside food, I can only eat the food cooked by me. Let me know.

Hello Doctor,
Where is your office in XXXXXXX if You could tell.

Detailed Answer:
Dear
Thanks for reverting back

1. Tablet Gasex [Himalaya] and Stressan/Madiphala Rasayan [Sandu] are safe in pregnancy since they are not known to cause side effect if taken as per the prescribed dosage, and regarding other classical medicine(s) you have to consult an Ayurveda Physician near your home town for further analysis

2. For Constipation in pregnancy: first consult a /Gyn/OB Doctor to exclude cause of the same [since it could be natural in this stage], till then:

- purgation with olive oil is free from side effects.
. early morning [empty stomach] take either
- eat 10 pistachio + 4 raisins
- 100 gm tomato juice
- drink water after coming out of bed
PS. As in pregnancy it is normal to advise calcium/iron [both of them causes constipation]

3. Best way to relieve constipation and associated symptoms during pregnancy is/are:
. taking fibre rich diet [whole grains like oats, prunes, figs, carrots,] and eat in small proportion [eat slowly and chew properly] to avoid overloading the digestive system
. fresh fruits and vegetables [orange/grapes/pineapple juice are ideal], little of bitter taste before meal is good: ginger, lemon juice in hot water or may consult a Nutritionist to follow a pregnancy diet.
. maintain adequate hydration
. walk or exercise for at least 30 minutes
. avoid gas forming food like: potatoes, cabbage, cauliflower, honey, beans, broccoli, wheat, onion, fatty food(s),carbonated beverages, sweetened fruit juices, chewing gums, dairy products, white rice, pasta
. take minimal of stress/anxiety [which can increase swallowing of air] and resulting abdominal gas/bloating/belching

4.
i. Research has suggested that in some people use of probiotics can lead to side effects like: gas, diarrhea, bloating, upset stomach due to sudden increase of bacteria in the digestive system [and since curd is a dairy product you should exclude lactose intolerance] thus try lowering the probiotic dose to a level that is comfortable for you

ii. Since Asafoetida is known to cause uterine contractions and can lead to miscarriage thus is unsafe in pregnancy [gas/diarrhea is negative side effect of asafetida, since it is prescribed as an anti flatulent]

5. So for heart palpitations and gas formation first exclude with the investigations [earlier discussed] and only then something concrete can be said
