Suggest Alternative Medication For Painful Urination

default
Posted on Wed, 28 Oct 2015
Question: Hello. I was prescribed Metronidazole (Flagyl) for BV. With the BV I was experiencing pain during urination. With taking the Flagyl, the painful Urination has gotten worse. Is this normal? I thought Flagyl was supposed to get rid of the BV, thus getting rid of the symptoms?

Brief Answer:
You are right, however, you could have superinfection of candida infection

Detailed Answer:
Welcome to HCM. It is hard to say, but if you truly believe that the symptoms are worse, I suspect that you have overgrowth of candida, meaning you have a yeast infection that has overpopulated causing the urinary sypmtoms that you have, this is effect because you have eliminated the good bacteria by use of the antibiotic. I would suspect that you also had a yeast infection, I would get over the counter intifungal fluconazole to take and your symptoms should resolve, I hope this helps, good luck. Please note that if your symptoms continue despite this added treatment, then you might need to have your urine restested as you may have another infection still brewing.

I failed to mention that I was also prescribed Fluconazole for a yeast infection. Thus far, I have taken 3 Metronidazole pills, and 1 Fliconazole. I take 1 Metronidazole pill twice daily (500MG) by mouth and I am taking 1 Fluconazole by mouth every day for two days. I am traveling for work so I went back to Urgent Care where I was seen and told them that my burning during urination had gotten worse. The response was that it takes at least 2-3 days for the Metronidazole to kick in and I have only been taking it for a day and a half. They also said that since my urine test was negative, that I just need to give the medication a chance to work and if I am not feeling better by Friday to call them
Does this seem right to you?

Brief Answer:
Thanks for the added information, I agree with their approach

Detailed Answer:
If you have taken the fluconazole, then we can strike out the candida, however, just because you are taking the medication as stated, does not mean that the bacteria or fungus die immediately, and that is why IF after your course of treatment you still have the urinary symptoms, you will need to see the doctor/Urgi-care again. I would call them on Friday as stated, if they prescribe something again, at least you shouldn't have to go and see them again.
