Question: Hello Doctor, I am in need of help for my 30 year old son. He is an alcoholic and has depression and anxiety issues we don't seem to be able to handle. He just removed himself from a treatment center Monday because he decided to drink. Now he is lower then ever. We have had very little help with experts to help with some of the underlying problems he has bottled up. He has a college degree but feels like a failure and wants us to let him go. I fear for his life. We live in Wichita, Kansas. Please advise.
Thank you his motherXXXX

Brief Answer:
Depression needs to be treated first

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for choosing health care magic for posting your query.
I have gone through your question in detail and I can understand what you are going through.
First and foremost his depression should be treated.
Depression can occur with regular stress and it can also occur biologically without any stress as well. You need proper treatment for the same. There are various effective therapies for depression like fluoxetine, venlafaxine, bupropion, mirtazapine or escitalopram and they are all very effective and mostly safe. He may also require some benzodiazepines like clonazepam or lorazepam for a short period like 2-3 weeks to reduce the anxiety and help with your sleep.
If he is averse to the drug therapies then there is also an option of cognitive behavioural therapy. This therapy is taken by either a psychologist or a psychiatrist in which the therapist identifies impaired cognitions (Thoughts) and try to correct them. They are 15-20 min weekly session and there should be around 8-10 sessions to help him with his illness.
After the depression is controlled his alcohol dependence needs to be targeted. For that he needs to be admitted for the initial detoxification and then there are various medicines available these days to reduce his craving for alcohol like accamprosate or baclofen or topiramte etc. Make him join alcohol anonymous as well.
Hope I am able to answer your concerns.
