My wife aged about 45 years complains about breathlessness while climbing staircase and sometimes slight giddiness. Other day the breathlessness problem happened when she climbed down the staircase (may be 15 steps). When consulted a doctor (cardiologist) he recommended to go to ECG, Sugar/Heamoglobin/BP/Tyriod test. But the report shows that everything is normal. Our company doctor now advises to go for ECO test. What would you recommend? Is ECO necessary? Other things like weight (55kgs) and monthly menstrual cycles is normal.

Hi friend,
Welcome to Health Care Magic

Yes, it is necessary.
ECHOcardiogram is necessary to see the heart valves (structure, deformity, infection) / heart muscle (Cardiomyopathy) and heart function (Ejection fraction, wall motion abnormality) / clots...
It is also preferable to do TMT – Treadmill exercise ECG; may be with thallium isotope – is necessary to evaluate ischemia (reduced blood flow / Coronary Artery Disease)

The body's balancing mechanism is in the inner ear. An ENT (Ear Nose Throat) specialist is the one to see - They have special tests to confirm or exclude the contribution of the ear...If there are no clues, you have to be followed up by a neurologist.

Take care
Wishing speedy recovery
God bless
Good luck

sorry, I forgot to mention... our company doctor tells me that inadequate blood supply to brain could lead to dizziness or inadequate blood supply to lungs could also lead to breathlessness. Your comments please..
Answered by Dr. Anantharamakrishnan 44 minutes later

There are several causes of breathlessness.
Lung disease comes first – Pulmonologist can exclude...CT chest and/or Spirometry may at times be necessary. The most common one is asthma...
Inadequate blood supply to lungs is not common – if the lung does not get enough blood, then rest of the body can not get it too.. Pulmonary Hypertension is usually responsible for this and an Echocardiogram will give the clue...
Left Heart failure is one cause of breathlessness – exercise ECG and ECHo are necessary.
At times, chest pain is mistaken for breathlessness...

Inadequate blood supply to lower brain is of course one of the reasons for dizziness.
In such situations, there may be other symptoms referable to brain
Neurological consultation is necessary; MRI and/or MRA will clarify...

All the best
