Sore Throat After Sexual Intercourse. RNA PCR HIV Test Negative. Black Patches On Tonsil, Drooling, Swollen Lymph Nodes. Should I Be Worried About HIV?

Question: I had oral, anal, vaginal intercourse with a lady on XXXXXXX 18, 2012. Since then, I have been having a on/off sore throat. 3 weeks after sexual contact, I did have RNA PCR HIV test and it came back negative. On April 7, 2012, I noticed black patches on my tonsils, I'm drooling, and my lymphs seem slightly swollen. I did have another PCR HIV test two weeks ago, and that came back negative. Should I be worried of HIV and/or STDs?

Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
An unprotected intercourse does pose you at a risk of contacting STDs like HIV. Since your RNA PCR test is negative even at 8 weeks after the exposure, you need not worry about the HIV infection. Having a persistent sore throat is just a co incidence which needs a proper antibiotic treatment after a throat swab culture.

RNA PCR is a highly sensitive test and a negative test at more than six weeks after exposure is confirmatory of absence of HIV infection.
