Posted on Sat, 1 Aug 2015
Question: I drink alcohol in large amount twice a week and I also have penile vitiligo. While I take a B complex vitamin, I doubt it is strong enough in some areas such as folic acid and B1. I read should take 100mg of B1 when consuming large amount of beers 6 or more? My B Complex only has 10mg. Folic acid is 400ug, but should take double this when consume alcohol? I have a few gray hairs appear 2 years ago, with no rapid spread, I still have some. I also get fatigue and feel tired, acne constant on and off (read it can be related to B vitamin). Please advise best amount of Vitamin B to take for my situation.

I consume 40-50 British alcohol units over 2 days, once a week. But on those days eat little food to reduce calories.

I also read vitiligo people can be low on some vitamin b. I take many other vitamins such as C, Zinc, Copper, A, PABA, 5-htp and Tyrosine.

Brief Answer:
Get rid Of Alcohol. All will be well.

Detailed Answer:
Thank you for asking

I read your question and i understand your concern. The main problem here is alcohol and you need to get rid of that ASAP. As far as B complex vitamins is concerned you are trying to kill a giant with a pebble or a petal of a flower. Wont work.

B 1 is used only in preventive measures to prevent wernicke korsakoff syndrome an alcoholic encephalopathy but this is not the only damage alcohol does. Liver, pancreas, stomach, fats, diet , neuropathies and a long list of pandora's box of troubles beyond imagination and not worth to face just for the taste of alcohol.

Regarding the B complex , All a man needs is 1.2 mg of B1 in a day as RDA and higher doses of 50 to 100 only when alcoholic encephalopathy ( wernicke's ) kicks in and not before that. Or a person develops B1 deficiency like Beri Beri disease where one can think of upto 30 mg a day.

As far as vitiligo or other issues are concerned those are minor troubles . We need to catch the bigger fish in the pond. Which is Alcohol addiction. get rehab, sign up to AA , get a shrink , talk to someone you feel comfortable with , whatever and however the way you can be helped.

I hope it helps. Take good care of yourself and dont forget to close the discussion please.

Thanks for your reply.
I enjoy drinking beers twice a week, but on the other days I don't drink any alcohol at all. I also have a good diet on those days.
I don't feel my alcohol consumption is out of control or too high for my age. But do you think increasing folic acid is useful on the 2 days I do drink? What about B1?

Thanks

Brief Answer:
RDA is enough

Detailed Answer:
Thank you for getting back!

I believe you are having enough micronutrients from folate to zinc. All a man needs in their recommended daily allowance and no more no less. A single pill is designed to meet all those needs. Plus our daily diet is providing nitrients on their own. So a good balanced diet and healthy lifestyle may even reduce the need of vitamin supplements even.

regarding the alcohol consumption, i believe no minimum is minimum enough to prevent the adverse effects these beverages have in long run. Any how you have to decide what you plan for your body when you turn 40.

I hope it helps. Take care.

Khan
