Pregnant, Been Taking Practin Tablets. Any Side Effect On The Baby?

Question: Hi, how ru ,? Im pregnant 8 werks now and i didnt know i was taking tablets they called dextamed, i was overseas they are like practin tables . Is there any side effect for the baby??

Hello, I would be happy to help you with your questions.

Congratulations on your pregnancy. While there is probably no reason to be concerned, there are some studies that have shown an associated between high dose treatment with this medication and 'oral clefts', often referred to as a cleft palate or cleft lip. This is not a strong association between its use and this finding in the newborn.

So assuming that you have not been on extremely large doses, then you probably have little to worry about. I would bring this up with your doctor and they should schedule an ultrasound at 20 weeks at which time they can look at the babies palate.
