Question
HI Doctor
I think I am having obsessive disorder..on internet porn. I have tried my best to stay away from it many times. But then every time the urge to go back comes with greater force. I think it is high time to get proper medical help.
My background...I work for an MNC. I have a great reputation both professionally and personally. God has gifted me with many other skills like painting, writing, playing music, etc etc. I have lot of friends too. But the dark side of me is not known to anyone. I am a widower since last 6 months.

I know that I have to divert my time to what i am passionate about. But somehow the compulsive urge does not allow me. I end up wasting my lot of time on net, trying to chat with someone, or watch porn.
After I waste my time on these, I end up having lot of guilt feeling. Though I vow not to do that again, I end up doing that same things next day.
A lot of my time, which i could have used to nurture my other skills is going waste. On top of that, these thoughts and an unwanted sexual urge attacks my mind even when I am in office. I am a person who is enjoying enormous reputation as a 'good person" not only in office and in personal life too. I do not want that to be sabotaged by these disorder, which i really want to fight..but I am not able to.
I don't have any other problems. I do not smoke or drink . Apart from the problem mentioned, I have a healthy lifestyle.

having tried my own ways..and failed miserably..I thought it is high time to seek professional help. Hence I am here. As i feel but awkward in facing a doctor, i am seeking help here. But if you suggest I should go and XXXXXXX someone, please do suggest someone in the city. I am from bangalore.

I prefer a reply in mail, instead of phone.

Hello,

Thanks for your query.

It is nice to see such a nice and precise description of problem in spite of having so many problems and busy life schedule.

Important points of your query:
•     Age 35 years, widower for 6 month.
•     Healthy life style in spite of problems.
•     Interest in painting, writing and playing music.
•     Symptoms: Sexual obsession and compulsive porn watching followed by guilt.

From your query it appears that you are suffering from a condition called Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, in which patient has repetitive thoughts followed by compulsive behaviour related to thought to decrease discomfort/anxiety which is followed by guilt. Untreated patient may develop depression in later life which can affect their life severely.

Following steps will be helpful in your case for management:

•     Take consultation from psychiatrist: As you are living in Bangalore, there is apex institute of psychiatry called NIMHANS which is famous worldwide among professionals.

•     For the treatment, both drug therapy and behaviour therapy is used. In drugs most commonly SSRI group of medicines are used and behaviour therapy started after complete behaviour analysis of patient.

•     Try to maintain personal and social life in your usual self.
•     Structure your routine life on paper and follow it. It helps greatly if done properly in your case.

Final message: Worry less, seek consultation early and structured routine as best as you can.

Hope this answers your query. In case of any doubt, I will be available for follow ups.

Wishing you good health.
