Suggest Treatment For Urinary Infection

Posted on Wed, 29 Apr 2015
Question: My father had developed urine infection around 2 months back. The doctor prescribed Silodal 8mg(one tablet a day) and Niftran 100mg (two capsules a day), as per the culture report. The the infection was cured in a month and the doctor stopped the medicine. But the infection has come up again now. Is it okay and safe to take Niftran for a prolonged period (with a break of around 15 days) every time? If yes, what should be the dosage.

Please advise. Thanks!

Brief Answer:
usually safe

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
What you have outlined is a fairly common problem where the infection recurs. U feel that in your case, you should repeat urine vulture and see if there is infection grown on culture, and if so, what antibiotic is it sensitive to. If it is the same as earlier, it means the infection is a 'persistence' and is usually due to a functional cause such as an enlarged prostate, for which silodosin has already been started, and if urine flow continues to be slow, a procedure for prostate might be needed.
On the other hand, vud there us infection but nor similar to the one he had earlier, he has to take the antibiotics as recommended by the sensitivity pattern, may be for 14 days at least, following which he can be on low dose nitrofurantoin such as niftran 50mg at bedtime for a period of 3 months after which you can reevaluate the position.
Hope I have been of help.
