Suggest Treatment For Sacral Fracture After Spinal Stenosis Surgery

default
Posted on Tue, 1 Sep 2015
Question: My 72 y.o. father had spinal stenosis surgery. 6 weeks later, he suddenly suffered a sacral fracture. He did not fall and osteoporosis was ruled out. What could have caused the fracture? What physical therapy is recommended? Should he be weight-bearing for 6-8 weeks until the fracture heals, or should he - within 16 days of the fracture - be doing "weightbearing, as tolerated" as he is currently being advised. He is suffering from peripheral neuropathy, has bladder and bowel disfunction and aspiration. He also suffers from stage 1 Parkinson's Disease.

Thanks for your query

I'm Dr Sudhir Kumar

I have gone through your query and understand your concern. As you have said that he has got fracture without fall so this fracture can be a pathological fracture ( fracture secondary to other diseases) . He may need MRI and CT scan to know the cause.Normally these fracture should be advised rest for nearly 6 weeks but if this is a minor fracture then 15 days rest may suffice. For pain relief he can take analgesic such as ibuprofen. Calcium supplements is required to assist in healing of fracture. I can serve you better if you upload x ray, CT scan or MRI report.

You can discuss with your doctor about it.

Hope your query get answered. If you have any clarification then I will be happy to help you.

Wishing you a good health.
Take care.
