What Do My Lab Test Results Indicate?
Question: Ive had a couple different diabetes tests. Tje first
a1c came back 4.8 and the fasting glucose under 100. Still have a lot of symptoms so i got a second opinion. a1c was 4.8, but fasting glucose 101 which is high. I cant get into a doctor for a couple weeks so i purchased
A glucose monitor. I got a fasting reading this morning of 98 and post two hour meal of 129. Are those normal? If so why would a previous fasting come back higher? Im eating healthier, exercising more and am 4'11 and 98 pounds so not overweight. No family history of diabetes. Im getting frustrated with no definitive results and dont want to just go on if it is diabetes or even pre diabetes. The two doctors ive been to seem to ignore most of the symptoms, recently blurry vision being a newer symptom. Ive been told this stuff could be numbers of things but have tested negative. They did say my insulin is low, they didnt act concerned but wouldnt that be a pretty good symptom of diabetes? Im super frustrated. Sorry its so long. Appreciate any advice until i can get in in two to three weeks.

If you want to be 100% sure whether you have diabetes or pre diabetes, then a test called Oral Glucose Tolerance can be done. It is more definitive than the other tests.
When I see someone like you in my practice, I typically order the following blood tests in addition to a detailed physical examination:
CBC (Complete Blood Count, also known as Hemogram; includes Hemoglobin, WBC and Platelet counts)
Electrolytes (Sodium and Potassium in particular)
Liver function tests (SGOT , SGPT, Albumin, Bilirubin, Alkaline Phosphatase)
Kidney function tests (BUN, Creatinine)
TSH
25 hydroxy Vitamin D
None of these tests require any fasting and can be done at any time of the day
