Is Vitiligo Hereditary?

Question: I am going to marry a lady, she is 25 years old. Her father (My father-in-law) has Vitiligo. Her mother don't have.My lady is also don't have vitiligo. Her elder sister is also don't have that vitiligo.My question is if I got married with the lady and had children in future , are my children suffers from Vitiligo inherited by their grandfather (My father-in-law )....? Please give conclusion about my offsprings...whether they will get vitiligo in future or not..? I am waiting with pending my marriage decision......? Please give me confirmation.

I understand your concerns. About 1 in 200 individuals get Vitiligo (North America). In families, that increases to about 5% for children or parents, and about 2-3% for grandparents. Let me mention that vitiligo itself is not inherited, but the disposition to have it can be inherited. Vitiligo involves multiple genes and hence is a bit complex. It is hard to predict whether there would be any transmission of this disposition but if your to-be-wife does not have the disease, the possibility of it getting transmitted to your offspring is even lower. In cases of this disposition, the disease process sets off only after some definite stimulus triggers it. So, unless the trigger is present, the expression of the disease might not be there and the person may remain disease free.

I have explained you the situation. I am sure that you would be able to take a decision based on the mentioned facts.
