Is Vertebroplasty The Right Treatment For Fractures In Spine?

default
Posted on Wed, 8 Jun 2016
Question: Hello I am in very good shape and I work out all of the time. I am 70 years in Nov coming. I had a fall while pulling a dolly cart that caused me to impact the ground right on my tail bone. This caused spinal compression fractures of my lower spine in two places. My doctors want to inject a liquid composite into each bone. Is this a good idea? Or is this just like getting a root canal that only lasts a short time before they break up. Is this the right plan for what I have done? Thank you, XXXXXXX

Brief Answer:
This is for pain relief

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
I have studied your case. Your doctor is suggesting you a procedure which is called vertebroplasty. In this procedure cement is injected in bone. It provides very good pain relief. But it does not offer any other advantage.Pain relief usually last more then a root canal. But there can be some mild back pain for long time. I personally never do this procedure. I suggest you following.
1.Spine fracture suggest weak bones so take Injection Teriparatide daily for three months. It will decrease your 80% pain.
2.Hot water fomentation and Brufen tablet if pain increases on movements.
3.Lumbosacral corset can be used.
4.Avoid jerky activities or travelling.
If pain stays or increases even after following these steps then you can go ahead with vertebroplasty. I hope this answer will be useful for you.Let me know if there is any other followup questions.
thanks
