Is Transvaginal Sonography Advisable At 31 Weeks Of Pregnancy?

Question: Hello doctor m 31 week pregnant...i had usg today which shows my cervical length is 2.4cm...and posterior placenta grade 2 maturity..is it normal??should i go for transvaginal sonography???

Thanks for the query to HCM,
Your CERVICAL LENGTH IS LESS THAN 2.5cm (normal cervical length) and hence this increases your chances of cervical incompetency as you grow further in pregnancy. Cervical incompetency can potentially increase your chances of preterm onset of labour.

The placental location of being posterior is fine and offers no problems to delivery. You should get the cervical length confirmed by transvaginal ultrasound.

Hello,
Abdominal scan and transvaginal scan of course have difference in accuracy as transvaginally the estimates are precisely more accurate and conclusive as compared to an abdominal scan and hence a borderline case of cervical incompetency should be confirmed with transvaginal ultrasound.
Placenta being posterior is a normal finding.

i had cervical erosion before pregnancy...due to which i hv to undergo cryotherapy...nw from past 10 days my cervix is painin badly..although no discharge n blood appear....i did urine culture also everything comes out fine...is it possible dat erosion comes back again?if so how risky is it in pregnancy?

Hello,
The cervix can become hyperaemic again and if there is pain then there may occur dilatation as well, please get yourself evaluated by your obstetrician soon before the pain worsens. We don't want you to go into preterm labour.

The answer to it is absolute bed rest as cervical cerclage will not be successful now at 31 weeks at all. Any contractions can be terminated with uterine relaxants. This whole process would have to be supervised and if need be hospitalisation shall be required.
