Is Throat Infection A Symptom Of STD?

default
Posted on Tue, 18 Nov 2014
Question: Hi
I am little worried for my stupid mistake one month back.
I met a stranger in my hotel . I did not have intercourse/penetrative sex, though wearing condom all the time.
I did kiss and suck her breast and face.
I am having throat infection which I had one week back with fever and I got recovered after having anti biotic. I was perfect for a week and then again had throat infection this week with very mild fever for one day. After 3 days I don't have any fever but still have red throat. Have attached a report.
Wanted to know if I need to be worried of anything?
My blood parameters in some cases are not okay. Like platelets and WBC count and also lymphocytes. This may be that I took the test when I was having the throat infection.

Brief Answer:
Please attach report or send by email

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX,
Thanks for writing in to us.

I have read through your query in detail.
Your actions in the hotel with the stranger are unlikely to cause any serious infection. You might be having repeated throat infection and not a sexually transmitted disease. I want to have a look at your reports to discuss the matter in detail.

I cannot find your reports attached to your query.
May I request you to please attach the report again or send it through email to YYYY@YYYY with query Id 144634 in the subject line and please write a follow up query stating you have attached the report.

Waiting to see your report.

Regards,
Dr.Vivek

Brief Answer:
You have a mild infection

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX,
Thanks for writing back with an update.

I have read through your report.
The following values are abnormal
1. TLC (total white blood cells) is borderline high. This indicates mild infection.
2. Platelets is borderline low and can be seen in infection.
3. Absolute lymphocytes is borderline high which is again because of infection.

Please do not worry as HIV is also negative and if you had received oral sex with condom then there is no risk of HIV. If you had oral sex without condom then please get ELISA tst repeated at 6 months for peace of mind.

It is important to tell you that close skin contact like kissing can transmit herpes and human papilloma infections even if you are wearing condom. So please be careful when having encounters with strangers.

Hope this answers your question. Please feel free to correct any oversight in my interpretation of your problems and discuss them in detail as per your requirements.

Hope your query is answered.
Do write back if you have any doubts.

Regards,
Dr.Vivek

Thanks doctor. This is quite helpful.
I was wearing condom every time still I can repeat the test. Do you suggest after 6 months or 3 months?
Can you please elaborate on herpes and human papilloma infections ?
Is it life threatening? What are the symptons? Is it curable?
How do I know if I have one...

Brief Answer:
Human papilloma and herpes - not life threatening.

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX,
Thanks for writing in with an update.

If you were wearing condom all the time then there is no risk of HIV and therefore need for repeating HIV test is not there. For those who may have a risk of HIV, a PCR DNA or RNA test is done 10 days after exposure. This is followed by ELISA at 3 months and if negative then ELISA or Western Blot is repeated again at 6 months for final confirmation.

Human papilloma (HPV) is the most common sexually transmitted infection and there are many subtypes of virus. You can get HPV by having vaginal, anal, or oral sex with someone who has the virus. It is most commonly spread during vaginal or anal sex and also by touching or kissing each other for a long time. Some types can cause health problems including genital warts and cancers. It is usually not life threatening and many people who have the infection will not have any symptoms.

Genital herpes is an STD caused by two types of viruses. The viruses are called herpes simplex type 1 and herpes simplex type 2. You can get herpes by having vaginal, anal, or oral sex with someone who has the disease. Genital herpes sores usually appear as one or more blisters on or around the genitals, rectum or mouth. The blisters break and leave painful sores that may take weeks to heal. These symptoms are sometimes called “having an outbreak.” The first time someone has an outbreak they may also have flu-like symptoms such as fever, body aches, or swollen glands.

The symptoms of HPV and herpes can be controlled with treatment but the infection usually remains.

If you have any kind of rashes in and around your genital organs or mouth then a consulting a doctor will confirm the conditions. Herpes has antibody tests which can give a confirmation.

Hope your query is answered.
Do write back if you have any doubts.
