Is There A Permanent Cure For Chronic Suppurative Otitis Media ?

Posted on Mon, 12 May 2014
Question: I have CSOM, and a surgery has been recommneded. But I know three cases where ever after surgery ear discharge bounced back. Is there a permanent cure for CSOM. I do not have pain although thin watery discharge is there. It seems to be more allergic in nature -particulary to fluctuation in weather and smoke. I take betnosol-n and it heals up in 3 days .. but then again if there is exposure to too much pollution or weather fluctuation (especially in rainy seasons) .. I get it back. If weather is consistent .. it could in control for months (I was in Pune India for ~8years and would hardly get infection once a year) , but currently I am in Bangalore .. which has too much pollution and weather fluctuation .. I get infection almost a month .. Does repeated use of betnosol-n have any side effect? I do not take for more that 5 days (Max) ..twice day --generaly its 3 days twice a day and it heals up..

Brief Answer: please meet an allergy specialist! Detailed Answer: Hello! Your case seems to be related t allergy!! Due to allergy your eustachian tube is getting blocked ( this is a normal tube between the nose and the ear) resulting in symptoms. This will result in repeated failure of surgery for csom and recurrent discharge. You will have to meet an allergy specialist , who will find out what exactly you are allergic to and guide you further. There are many medications for allergy and he will be in the best position to explain to you the usage and duration of treatment. Repeated use of betnosol-n drops is not good and can promote an infection and reduce your hearing. please avoid using it and meet your allergy specialist. Take care

Thanks a lot doctor, For the first time in my consultation history an Allopathic doctor have accepted that CSOM surgery can fail if it's allergic (all would say go for CSOM, it will never occur) - My family homeopathic doctor have told me that it is allergy -if I can keep it away, it should be in control ..which is really really difficult. Even if i get operated, it will bounce, because of infection. I have been doing a lot and a lot of research on internet and people have kept it away for a year or so but it gets back. When in Pune, I was in a cyber city and had walk to work .. -hardly braving smoke, polutions, dust and used to do a lot of exercise . seems that kept allergy away and I had my best 8 years there. I see you are located in Pondicherry, I wish I could contact you. Meanwhile, can we treat allergy in Allopath -I know the allergy is due to smoke (especially kerose mixed auto ply a lot in bangalore) and temperature change (For e.g. coming from too hot and I drink a glass of cold water, cycling and sweating and all of sudden it starts raining, comfortable temperature in room but windy outside ) --in nutshell, situation where people would get common cold and cough or sneezing, I get this ear discharge!!. Any suggestion in general, or if you knwo whom I can consult in bangalore/pune/patna

Brief Answer: pleas meet an allergy specialist! Detailed Answer: hello i can make out that you have done your research well and i can totally understand your troubles.! Please remember that the best way to treat an allergy is to avoid an allergen and in your case it may require shifting your work place. i know this is difficult but if your health is suffering so much , i would like you to strongly consider it. You can go to Christian medical college , Vellore , they have a good allergy center and can try , what is called as immunotherapy for your allergy , it may help you and relieve your symptoms. Please think about it! Take care!

Hello Doctor, Thanks a lot for answer, this question is not really medical... but I see u deal a lot with allergies as well so am putting this question: 1.> What type of weather is best suited for allergic person like me (Bangalore/Pune/Delhi/Hyderabad). Pune has been good to me .. but am not sure if its due to location change or some other reason ..almost 3 years out of Pune.. so kind of suspicious if returning there will help 2.>can it be just that as I am growing older, with lots of responsibilits my immune is lil bit weked -what can i do to increase my immune (I am a vegeterian) -any supplement 3.>Can lack of rest also cause allergy trigger -i have observed that some time a hectic schedule also introduces it 4.> I cannot avoid pollution or travel --what best practices/precautions can I take to avoid these kind of allergies

Brief Answer: Breson and Septilin... Detailed Answer: hello! 1. The best weather would be a place with little dust and mostly dry with lesser humidity; So Pune will be a good idea!! 2. Your immunity has nothing to with you being a vegetarian and I am also a vegetarian!! Most of the time allergies tend to decrease with age and not increase. You can try a supplement called as Bresol and Septilin from Himalya company; but I would like you to meet your doctor first! 3. Stress can reduce your immunity and increase your allergies. Therefore try to avoid it and take adequate rest! 4. If you cannot avoid pollution try to use masks and avoid travel during the rush hours , also use an air conditioning in your car and avoid breathing the polluted air directly. Take care!
