Posted on Fri, 16 Jan 2015
Question: Hi Dr,

I am working mom of 11 month old girl baby. My baby's weight is ~ 9kg and I have some concern reg her total milk intake.
She was exclusively breastfed till 6 months after that I slowely introduced her semi solids.

As of today she has oats/semolina/ragi breakfast with 2 spoons milk powder.

B/w bfast and lunch she will have 2 small bananas

Lunch: rice+dal+veggies cooked mashed

After lunch she will have a fruit like orange etc

evening snacks paneer/upma/sweet potato + may be some apple boiled

Dinner : daliya+dal+ veggies

Here and there in between and at night and just after waking up she will have breastfeed.
Also ~ 1.5 ounce formula milk in day time.

I feel that she is having food more and less milk. Or her diet is OK?

Thanks a lot,
XXXX

Brief Answer:
diet proper for your baby

Detailed Answer:
Dear XXXXXXX

Thanks for posting on healthcaremagic.

I have gone through the details provided. The diet is proper for your baby. You can give her semi solids 6-8 times a day. The amount should be enough to fill the stomach of your baby. 1.5 ounce is reasonable but more can be given if the child demands.

Hope that helps.

Hi Dr.

Thanks for your reply.

My baby vomitted today early morning in good quantity. Today morning she took bfeed and then I tried to give her 3 scoops of cerelac , last spoon was forcefed and she vomitted after that but in lesser quantity.

She is teething also.
Does she need any medicines? How should be cared today? What should I give her to eat/drink?

Thanks,
XXXX

Brief Answer:
Continue feeding as usual. Antiemetics may be given if felt required

Detailed Answer:
Hi

Thanks for writing back.

Please do not force feed the baby. It may lead to vomiting as in this case. Nevertheless, you need to coax the child to eat if she is not eating properly.

You may give Oral Rehydration Solution (ORS) after reconstituting in appropriate amount of water (200 ml or 1 litre depending upon the size of sachet) to replenish the salt and water lost. If the child seems to become lethargic, you need to see a doctor. If the vomiting does not recurr, it is not a cause to worry about. If the vomiting recurrs, you need to give antiemetics like Ondansetron syrup. Food and breast feeding needs to be continued as usual.

During the teething time, it is not unusual for the child to put anything and everything in their mouth. This could also be a possible cause of the vomiting. It could also give worm infestation. Periodic deworming at yearly intervals with a dose of 5 ml Syrup Bandy (Albendazole) can be suggested to get rid of such infestations.

Hope that helps.

Hi Dr.

Thx for your reply. That day(Saturday) 3 times she vomitted and after that I gave her 0.2 ml domstal and her vomitting stopped after that.

To summarize Friday, Saturday and Sunday she only had at XXXXXXX 1/3rd to 1/2 of her normal food intake.

Today(Monday) she kind of completely refused to take any food. She only had banana, 1 orange and some boiled apple, ~70 ml of formula feed and some bfeed.
Her tooth also cut the jaw and can be seen.

Major concern today is
1. her refusal to food
2. 3 times whitish/pale yellow semi solid potty with undigested food
3. 1/2 of her normal urine freq

Pl advice.

Thanks,

Brief Answer:
Do not take it lightly

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for writing back.

I would insist not to take refusal to feed and the vomiting lightly. I suggest:
1. Visit a doctor and get her examined.
2. She is going into dehydration as indicated by her reduced urinary output. Reconstitute ORS or oral rehydration solution by mixing the entire packet in appropriate quantity of water and give sip by sip.
3. If the child is not feeding well, I would insist you get a blood count and CRP (C-reactive protein) and stool for microscopy. You may also need to get a x ray of abdomen if your treating physician feels required.

Hope that helps.
