Is Stopping Losartan Advisable When With High BP?

default
Posted on Fri, 30 Sep 2016
Question: I was recently taken off Losartan 50 mg/HCTZ 12.5 mg and tato takeken of Losartan and told just HCTZ 12.5. My b blood pressure is always 130/80 to 140/90 almost all the time when using the combination of Losartan and HCTZ. I think it is dangerous to stop taking the combination pill so I did not stop and my blood pressure is continuing to stay in the 130/80 or 90 range. What do you think? (Note; My primary care physician is the only one who gets readings like 90/70. All RNs, paramedics and my blood pressure gauge consistently show the 130/80 to 140/90. Also, I am going to see my new PCP in a week. No longer feel confident or comfortable with the former PCP.

Thank you for contacting HCM with your health care concerns

I agree with your that you should continue to take your combination medication. As long as your home pressures are good and you have are not having low blood pressures or syncope there is no reason to stop the Losartan/HCTZ. My thinking is that you leave at home and not at your doctors office. The office pressures are not always accurate and they are only a small measurement of your true daily pressures. Agree with you looking for a new PCP. Stay on your current medication and continue to take home pressures and record them for your new doctor.
