Posted on Fri, 20 Jun 2014
Question: Hi

I have a ten months old. On Sunday, He was prescribed Paracetamol and I was given a pack of paracetamol of 250mg/5ml oral suspension and on it written 3ml every four to six hours.
I unfortunately mistook this as calpol and gave him 5ml on Sunday night, monday morning and afternoon. It was only in the evening I realised and changed it to 3ml.
I am very worried now as the pack says immediate medical advise should be sought in the event of an overdose even if the child seems well because of the risk of delayed serious liver damage
Pls help

Brief Answer:
good you realised in time

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Welcome to the healthcaremagic
Total daily dose of paracetamol is 60-80 mg/kg/day.Your baby must be weighing at least 8 kg.( 8×60=480 to 8×80=640 ).So 480-640 mg in 24 hours is tolerable. You gave 250 mg(5ml) on Sunday and 500 mg (5+5=10ml ) on Monday. So it is within safe limits. So I don't think that he will experience any side effects. But still consult your pediatrician to personally examine him to rule out side effects.
Happy to help you
Best regards

Brief Answer:
dont worry

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for review
You gave 250(5ml) + 250 (5ml ) + 150 (3ml ) = 650 mg yesterday
As per your child's weight tolerable dose per 24 hours is 8.7× (60-80) = 542 to 704 mg.
So it is within higher normal limit. So dont worry.
Still get him examined from your doctor.
Happy to help you
Best regards
