Is Pregnancy Possible Despite Taking I-pill?

default
Posted on Wed, 23 Dec 2015
Question: 1) My partner's menstrual cycle is typically of 40 days. After unprotected intercourse on approx. 40th day (she was not yet having her period then), she consumed I pill within 6 hours of the act. so, what are the chances of pregnancy in this case. Also, should she expect a delayed cycle because of the pill. will the forthcoming cycles be affected as well, if yes, to what extent?
2) Can over the counter home pregnancy test be effective in determining pregnancy. what would be the best time period to take such a test.

Brief Answer:
Almost nil chances of pregnancy

Detailed Answer:
Hi dear, I have gone through your question and understand your concerns.
1. The chances of pregnancy by an unprotected intercourse in days just prior to periods are almost nil, because the ovulation had occurred almost14 days prior to it.
It is considered as safe period for intercourse.
I pill delays the next expected periods by 2-3 weeks.
Further cycles are not usually disturbed.
2.Home pregnancy test by urine is accurate in detecting the pregnancy. She should get a urine pregnancy test done if she doesn't gets periods even after3 weeks from the expected date of periods.

Thanks Doctor for your reply.

I understand that the current period may be delayed by 2-3 weeks (current period was due one of these days, without the effect of the pill). But are there any chances of getting the period early or getting it a couple of times in the same month due to the side effects of the pill.

Given her history of irregular periods, can you suggest some safe treatment/medication to regularize her cycle in future?

Brief Answer:
Cause for irregular periods should be confirmed

Detailed Answer:
Hi dear,
Withdrawal bleeding occurs within5-7 days of the I pill intake. It remains for5-7 days.
After it, the next periods may come delayed by 2-3 weeks.
Irregular periods can be due to hormonal disturbances like hypothyroidism, hyperprolactemia or polycystic ovarian disease.
Hormonal profile and ultrasound should be done to confirm the diagnosis and treatment for regulating the periods should be then given accordingly.
Hope you found the answer helpful.
