Is Negative ELISA Test For HIV 1 And HIV 2 Antibodies After 4 Months Of Exposure Conclusive?

default
Posted on Wed, 11 Mar 2015
Question: Dear sir,
I am from XXXXXXX I had unprotected sex (oral sex only) with a man whose hiv status is unknown.I forgot whether i had HIV symptoms or not.I did ELISA test for HIV-1&HIV-2 antibodies after 4 & 8 months of exposure. The result was NON-REACTIVE. I didn't take P24 test. Now 1 year is completed.I read in some websites that very rarely somebody will not develope antibodies though HIV is present. So it is said that it is better to do PCR RNA OR PCR DNA test.Since p24 test will not be effective after 1 year of exposure,i need answers for the following questions

1.Is it mandatory to do HIV PCR test to diagonise HIV after 1 year of exposure?
2.If yes or No,please tell me Which is best RNA PCR OR DNA PCR?
3.Why that one is better than other?
4.Can i rely on the results of PCR test taken after 1 year of exposure?because in all websites,it is said that PCR is suitable for earlier detection only.then, can PCR test not be taken after 1 year of exposure?
5.Is it mandatory to produce doctor's presrcription to take PCR test in labs in india?

I will feel better If i get answers for my questions from XXXXXXX doctors.

Thank you for query.I am Dr Bharatesh D Basti answering your query.

Welcome to Health care magic.
I have gone through the details and can make out your anxiety.

If the Elisa tests or the tests for antibodies have come negative after 4 & 8 months ,then it is conclusive. The result is negative for HIV.

I do not see any need for HIV tests, provided there is no reexposure.

No need for PCR tests.HIV RNA PCR tests will be positive at earlier stages and later stages if infected with HIV.
