Question: i hit the front of my shin on a shopping cart and lump formed immediately afterward, I've got ice on it and the swelling seems to have gone down. just wondering if i should be worried about it

I do not think you should be worried at this point. The lump which has appeared is most likely soft tissues swelling. This is normal in case of such injuries. Some bruise can be present as well.
Bone fracture is what you can be worried about, however from your description it seems less probable.
Please continue with lukewarm compresses. If there will be an improvement, no need to do anything with it. If you find the pain is still there and it is not getting better or worse, an x-ray should be done.
