Is Lightheaded Ans Numbness In Feet Indicative If Brain Tumor?

default
Posted on Mon, 15 Sep 2014
Question: I have been having a constant lightheaded feeling for about a month. Around that same time I began having a numbness in my pinkies. I initially suspected this was carpal tunnel. I did have an episode where the top of my foot became a little numb and lasted about two days. I have felt an all over weakness, with no actual loss of strength. I have felt like like I have been having some trouble finding words. I feel like my speech is off too, but my husband says he notices no change. The only thing I have been diagnosed with is tmj, so I have had a near constant dull headache, tinnitus and jaw pain for about 4 years. I have an appt in 1 week with neurologist but I am really concerned it is ms or brain tumor or something else serious.

Brief Answer:
MS or brain tumor is unlikely.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for posting your query.

I have noted your symptoms and would like to reassure you that there is no need to worry, as they are not suggestive of serious neurological problems such as multiple sclerosis or brain tumor.

We need to look for alternative causes such as vitamin B12 or vitamin D deficiency or anxiety.

A detailed neurological examination would also be useful. I know you have an appointment in a week's time.

An MRI scan of brain should be done if any abnormalities are found on neurological examination.

I hope my reply has helped you.

I would be pleased to answer, if you have any follow up queries or if you require any further information.

Thank you. I will be seeing the neurologist next week. So you feel it warrants an exam and possibly further testing, but I am relieved to hear you do not think it is suggestive of serious problem like ms or brain tumor. It seems like everyday something new pops up. Now I have been having a strange sensation in my right arm. I would best describe it as a tingling. Someone mentioned my symptoms are consistent with fibromyalgia? I hate feeling like this, so scary!

Brief Answer:
Fibromyalgia is unlikley.

Detailed Answer:
Thank you for getting back.

Looking at your symptoms, fibromyalgia is unlikely, as in this condition, there is widespread pain, involving neck, arms, trunk and legs. On pressure, the pain increases.

Tingling in the arm is often due to mechanical pressure of the nerves and is a minor symptom. There is no need to worry about that too.

Best wishes,
Dr Sudhir Kumar MD DM (Neurology)
