Brief Answer:
Vaseline used properly will not cause epididymitis due to masturbation

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXX,
Thanks for writing in to us.

I have read through your query in details.
Use of vaseline is to reduce friction between the skin of penis and probably your hand and avoid any frictional injury due to masturbation. It does not mean you over do masturbation when using vaseline.

When used for the purpose of reducing friction by applying a little of vaseline on your hand, it will not cause epididymitis. Please take care that vaseline does not enter your urethral meatus through which semen and urine comes out. Also use a little amount of vaseline and wash yourself after you are done masturbating.

Hope this answers your question. Please feel free to correct any oversight in my interpretation of your problems and discuss them in detail as per your requirements.

Hope your query is answered.
Do write back if you have any doubts.

thanks for the the response doctor.

i should have elaborated in saying that over the time of use i possible have got vaseline into the urethra in the method i used so hence why i am inquiring about this.

i ask because of the vaseline that could possibly enter the urethra canal and become lodged/ dried etc and the possibility of the residue remaining further down the urethra. i have not used vaseline in about 5 months nearly. started to get frequent urinary symptoms about 2 months ago.

Brief Answer:
Vaseline in urethra can cause urinary infections and epididymitis

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXXXX,
Thanks for writing back with an update.

It is possible that vaseline in the urethra can obstruct the flow of urine. This can become the focus of an infection which will then involve the testis and epididymis. This can always cause epididymitis due to bacterial infections starting in the urethra possibly due to the vaseline.

Hope your query is answered.

so how long will the obstruction likely last usually? does urine wash it out?

how would a test reveal this is the source of the complaint?

Brief Answer:
Please find details below

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXXXX,
Thanks for writing back with an update.

The flushing out of vaseline by urine depends on many factors like the amount inserted, the weather conditions and also the force with which it was inserted. Vaseline is an oily material and cannot be washed out completely by urine.

Urethral obstruction is a mechanical obstruction and will persist as long vaseline is there in significant amounts. Providing a time frame is not possible but it can cause urinary infection if there is persistent decreased urine flow and this can be seen in a few days to a week. What happens is vaseline blocks the flow of urine and causes bacteria to collect in the proximal urethra. These bacteria then cause urinary infection and can cause inflammation in the epididymis after a week or 15 days.

Doing urine culture might show the infection causing bacteria in the urine.

thanks again doctor.

well like i explained i probably used the vaseline lastly around late august maybe last year. it was by late october (about 2 months later) i started to have noticeable urinary complaints as in going to the toilet quite a lot. the symptoms then cleared up about 10 days after that. i was given antibiotics and after it cleared i forgot all about the problem. then by late december i started to have the same complaints again. not sure if anxiety makes it worse at times or not. the only thing i cannot really confirm is to when any decreased urine flow might have started to take place.

what could be prescribed to clear any obstructions if needed?
also would/ could petrolatum in the product erode/ irritate the inner penile tissue over time from use when exposed?

Brief Answer:
For mild symotoms drink lots of water and visit washrooms regularly

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXXX,
Thanks for writing back with an update.

Since you are getting repeated symptoms therefore doing a urine culture will help to know the bacteria causing infections. It might also be that there is some stricture in the urethra that happened due to injury to cells lining the urethra due to your masturbation. Infections can also happen if you have had history of unprotected sex in the past.

If there is a mild infection then it should resolve by taking antibiotics and drinking lots of water and fluids and visiting washrooms regularly.

If the symptoms are severe and persistent then we have to know if you have got a stricture in the urethra. For this you should consult the urologist and if required go for X rays that will show if there is any urethral stricture. Depending on your symptoms the urologist might also do a cystoscopy to know if there is any infection in the urinary bladder.

The jelly can erode or irritate the inner urethral lining and cause strictures and rarely the penile tissue can also get involved.

Hope your query is answered.
