Is It Safe To Start Sulphite Containing Insulin Despite Being Allergic To Sulphites?

default
Posted on Thu, 12 Mar 2015
Question: I am allergic to sulfites, not sensitive, but allergic. My primary doctor wants me on insulin, but all insulin contains sulfite, even in minute amounts in manufacturing, I have been told by manufacturers. My allergist "gradient tested" me with 1 unit of insulin the other day. As soon as the shot was given, I felt a rushing in my chest to my face, dizziness and a closing of my throat. This quickly subsided (about 2 minutes). 15 minutes later, I developed a severe itching in my right shoulder (this happens to me when I am exposed to sulfites in stores, garden supply, cleaners ect.) The problem is, my allergist tells me it's OK and to go ahead and take the 16 units my primary doctor prescribed. I am a little scared to do this as I once had this reaction at a dentist office after receiving sulfites in an injection and my (old) primary doctor said it was a very dangerous reaction. What should I do?

Brief Answer:
better not to take sulphite containing insulin.

Detailed Answer:
Hello dear, thanks for your question on HCM.
I can understand your problem and situation.
Since you are allergic to sulphite ,better not to start sulphite containing insulin.
You are also having allergic reaction due to low dose of insulin. This also suggest, not to take it.
Better to start oral antidiabetic drugs. Now a days, many newer drugs are available with different mechanism of action. Also follow strict anti diabetic diet and regular anaerobic exercise to control diabetes.
So my suggestion is not to start insulin at present. Try to control diabetes with above mentioned things.
Hope I have solved your query.
I will be happy to help you further.
Wish you good health.
Thanks.
