Posted on Thu, 16 Jul 2015
Question: Hello, I am interested in starting the combined birth control pill (such as Cilest). I am 26, have a healthy and active lifestyle, am not overweight, have healthy blood pressure, do not have a history of blood clots in my immediate family, but I do smoke about 5 cigarettes a day. Is it generally safe for me to take a combined birth control?

Brief Answer:
better to quit smoking with birth control pills.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Welcome to HCM,

I can understand your concerns,

As you have told that you have healthy lifestyle, you can start taking combined birth control pill.

It is to be avoided in heavy smokers (cigarettes more than 20 per day) over age 35 years as it increases the risk of thrombo-embolic disorders.

You are aged 26 and smoke 5 cigarettes per day. I would suggest you to try and quit smoking when you start with birth control pills, as the risk can not be ruled out.

Hope this helps.

Feel free to ask further.

Thanks.

Thank you for the response. I will begin the combination pill and try to quit smoking altogether. That being said, are there any combination pills in particular that you would recommend for this situation?

Brief Answer:
contraceptives which are not containing estrogen are advisable.

Detailed Answer:
Hello dear,

First I want to explain you that Women who smoke and also use oral contraceptives (birth control pills) increase several times their risk of coronary and peripheral artery diseases, heart attack and stroke because of `estrogen` content in birth control pill.

So here some of contraceptives which are not containing estrogen I would like to suggest you.

These are:-
1.Depo-provera injection is given every 3months.
2.Mirena IUD.
3.implants like implanon is replaced every three years.

these contraceptives are safer than birth control pill in women who smoke.

you can choose any one of them according to your convenience.consult with your doctor about these contraceptives.

Hope this helps.

Feel free to ask further,

Thanks.
