Is It Safe To Have Anesthesia During 37 Weeks Of Pregnancy?

default
Posted on Mon, 8 Sep 2014
Question: Hi Dr.
Thanks for your answers last time, it helped us clearing our doubts. We have a new query on different subject now.

My wife is 37 weeks pregnant.
She has ingrown toe nail for last 4 months, which has developed infection and puss. She uses Neosporin ointment. Recently it has started to pain, so we visited a surgeon who suggested that the nail needs to be cut so that it does not enter the skin. For this Dr. suggested that my wife will be given "Local Anesthesia" (which they use for all the other patients) as its paining a lot and will cut the nail so that it does not enter the skin.
Query:
Scenario 1: If we get the nail surgery done now-
- Please suggest if taking local anesthesia is fine for my wife considering she is 37weeks pregnant? Will there be any side effect of Anesthesia to our baby?

Scenario 2: We wait till delivery for nail surgery-
- In this case will the developing infection cause any problem to our baby during this time? as we will get the surgery done post delivery of baby.
Regards,
doctor

Brief Answer:
No harm in operation

Detailed Answer:
Hello Mr. XXXXXXX good to talk to you again.
There is no problem in getting the toe nail operated under local anaesthesia but just ask your surgeon to avoid adrenaline along with local anaesthetic which is usually not used in hands and toes and never in pregnancy because it can go in blood and affect pregnancy.
There is no harm in local anaesthetic drug use.
It's better if you get it operated right now because it's not good to carry any infected focus in body while pregnant.
I hope I have cleared your concern as per the best of my knowledge.
Take care and wish you all the best.

Hi Dr.

As per your advice we have got the Toe Nail surgery done for my wife today.

Our surgeon has prescribed below medicines for 5 days, please let us know if they are safe and my wife can take it:

1) ZANOCIN 200 (Ofloxacin) - We've got to know that its not safe during pregnancy (my wife is 37 weeks pregnant). Is that correct?
2) DOLO 500

Please advise. Thanks in advance.

Brief Answer:
instead take amoxiclav

Detailed Answer:
Hello Mr. XXXXXXX thanks for follow up.
Dolo 500 is safe in pregnancy.
But we don't give ofloxacin in pregnancy as it interferes with fetal bone development so instead she should take tablet amoxiclav 625 mg twice a day for 5 days.
Wish her the best of health and may god bless you with a healthy baby soon.
Take care.
