Is It Safe To Do Scuba Diving When Suffering From Ear Infection?

default
Posted on Sat, 24 Jan 2015
Question: I am on a SCUBA dive vacation in Indonesia and believe I have an ear infection, which will interfere with diving. I have oral Cipro with me that was prescribed by my travel Dr. in case of stomach infection. Could the Cipro help my ear? I know Cipro ear drops are used for swim induced ear infections, but what about oral?

Brief Answer:
ear drum infection-stop scuba driving

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

I had gone through your question and understand your concerns that you are having ear infection.

As per your clinical details, it appears to be otitis media (ear drum infection).

Ciprofloxacin is an antibiotic, works for both stomach and ear infections. It can be given in oral tabs as well as ear drops, depending on the severity of infections.

Some DO's- for early healing of infection,

1. stop scuba driving.
2. Protect your ear from cold breeze or water during bath by dry cotton plugs.
3. Avoid consuming freezer products (ice cream/curd).

In case of persistent ear discharge, need to visit an ENT surgeon for further evaluation.
