Posted on Thu, 9 Apr 2015
Question: Hi, is it possible to sleep without upper denture , with full teeth on the bottom. My concern is that, my lower teeth will irritate my upper gums. Can you please advice me on this matter. With that saying, my other concern is that i been having trouble sleeping and experiance anxiety, panick disorder. Im wondering if this is a pattern starting with not wanting to take off my denture during sleep. What would be an alternative to help me cope with this situation. Thankyou
My doctor currently prescribed lorazepam, experianced side affects of nazea , dizziness, and change in appetit.

Brief Answer:
Yes, you may sleep without denture

Detailed Answer:
Hi

Thanks for writing in.

I usually recommend my patients to remove dentures always before sleeping because they stay on gingiva and gingiva also needs relaxation of 7-8 hours which is during sleeping. I don't think your dentist will object to removing dentures. Let me know if there is an objection.

If there is a cause for lack of sleep (as in this case) which can be solved, use of sedatives are not ideal. However you can take antianxiety drugs while sleep for sometime if problem occurs. There are other antianxiety pills such as alprazolam or zolpidem which may be used if you have problems with lorazepam.

Apply gum tone gel in case of inflammation to gums.

Consult physician for further query.
