Is It Normal To Hear The Pulse When Bending Down?

default
Posted on Tue, 14 Jun 2016
Question: When I bend down in a particular position like my head going toward my knees I can hear my pulse /heartbeat in my right ear only?
If I press my neck on right side it stops and gain starts when I stop pressing my neck
Is it due to some artery or vein ?
Is it normal ?
Can it start all the time also ?

Brief Answer:
It's completely Normal

Detailed Answer:
Hello , I am Dr Mody and I would be addressing your concern.
What you describe is physiological and happens with everyone.
When you bend down the heart comes more nearer to the chest wall causing a thud , which you would percieve as palpitation. For all right handed individual the right chest wall muscle is more developed causing more selective transmission to right ear .
Now when you press the right neck , you decrease venous return of blood to the heart leading to it beating softly causing no sensation .
So what is happening to you is completely nomral and just relax , You are normal .
Do let me know if any clarification needed and I would be happy to help.
Hoping I could resolve your doubt.
Do rate for others reference .

Brief Answer:
Mostly its nomral , Do not worry about the same

Detailed Answer:
Hello ,
Welcome back.
Pulsatile tinnitus is not generally related to position and can occur even while you are sitting .
Also the most common cause of pulsatile tinnitus is conductive hearing loss , which many times can be just because of wax in the ears .
As I have said reading google and trying to find a disease would only bring more anxiety . Still if you believe something is just not right a consult with an ENT surgeon for local examination and evaluate may be justified.
However the chances of you having the rarer cause is rare and living a healthy life and trust in almighty is the way forward .
Let me know if you wish to know specific s of anything and I would be happy to help .

My hearing test is normal and perfectly ok
Local EnT told me id hearing is normal then cause of pulse sound when bending could be blood vessel or vascular related
Thats why i am consulting you to know that since i am only listening to heartbeat sound in right ear that too when i bend towards my knees... Is it normal ?
I am still confused if it is vascular problem or ENT problem ?
I jad ultrasound of neck and all is fine

Secondly i feel that after heavy meal if i bend i feel more sound and warly morning it is very light sound or no sound in right ear
Does it signify anything

Brief Answer:
Consider reflux gastritis as differential. songraphy neck rules out vascu

Detailed Answer:
Hello , In 95 out of 100 the cause would be local ear related problem , since that has been sorted out . Lets move to more serious and rare cause like as you say vascular. Now any dilation / narrowing of the arteries or veins of neck can cause turbulent flow in the arteries which would cause pulsatile tinnitus in the same ear .
However as you say the neck vessel songraphy has been done and found to be nomral so we have ruled that out too . At this level I don't think any furthur evaluation is needed for the vascular cause .
However the last test if at all you wish to get it done is mri brain with MR angio of neck vessels . However by all means it would be nomral as per my clinical judgement.
Now considering it happens in bending down and with meals . Some reflux gastritis should be ruled out .
Just consider taking antacid like tab neksium 40 mg once a day before breakfast for 2 week . There is no side effects and hopefully we may resolve your problem.
Lastly rule out any cause which may cause the blood flow to be more than nomral like anemia , hyper thyroid ism etc .
Again I say what happens to you is benign and requires no treatment .
Hoping I could help .

I got ultrasound of neck and it was normal
I'm attaching the report
My acidity problem or gastric reflux is very major
I get too much acid reflux immediately after food all the time ????
Can This be the reason ????if yes then what could be the scientific reason behind this and I guess then that's the main problem
Do I need MRI brain?
My only question is :
if having heartbeat sound in right ear is normal as per your first answer then is it really required to do all this testing ?

I have attached the report
My thyroid is ok
And my haemoglobin is 16

Is it actually normal to hear your heartbeat from ur right ear when bending ?
Do lot of people hear that ?
That's my only question again ?

Brief Answer:
Yes GERD may cause symptoms like pulsatile tinnitus

Detailed Answer:
Hello ,
GERD can cause woosshing sound in the ears which you would perceive has pulsatile tinnitus, rarely it can cause tinnitus.
The only way to know whether that is the cause in your case is to treat it .
As I said any antacid for 6 weeks would the therapy for complete healing of stomach mucosa .

Pulsatile tinnitus may occur of bending in normal population particularly if your thin built .
It's just important that we rule out organic cause before labelling it as normal variant .

Hello again
I just noticed doctor that I get this pulsatile sound in my ear only if I bend after eating good or exercising
Specially if I climb stairs I get this sound
Can it be related to my craic output ?
After exercise also I m getting this sound
Is it related to my pulse and weight or GERd
doctor
Answered by Dr. Priyank Mody (26 hours later)
Brief Answer:
Clinical history doesn't point towards heart , examination by a doctor may

Detailed Answer:
Hello , when you exercise or climb stairs particularly if your overweight and not used to exercise, you may feel the heart beats as in both the above situation the heart pumps more vigorously to supply the extra blood to exercising muscle . This again is nomral to have .

Just based on the history I wouldn't be able to point out whether the symptoms are because of the heart or not , however the possibility of it being be case of the heart is extremely rare based on the clinical information you have provided, so if you are still tensed about the same a visit to local doctor would help him examine you .

Also the feeling of pulse is due to increase in cardiac output which suggests rather a healthy heart which is able to increase its function according to the need .
Hoping I could help you resolve your doubt.
Do let me know anything needed and I would be happy to help .

Brief Answer:
Normal MRI rules out all serious cause of pulsatile tinnitus

Detailed Answer:
Hello sir ,
When you do an MRI you rule out any neck vein compression or aneurysm that may cause your symptoms.
So with that you have ruled out all serious reasons which could have caused .
Gerd causes subjective sensation of you feeling your heart beats , there seems to be no objective cause for the same , it's only after we treat GERD and the symptoms resolve we can attribute it to GERD .
For your height you are surely overweight and hence should plan to lose atleast 15 kilos ,
It will help in resolving GERD as well as decrease your symptoms to great extent.
As your symptoms have been for long best way to to see a doctor who can examine you physically , though I don't forsee any serious underlying cause .
Let me know if any clarification is needed and I would be happy to help .

The MRI i got done is MRI of brain I hope it rules out neck problems also ?
S fondly u mean to say that GERD can cause subjective pulsatile tinnitus or heartnbeat in ears ?
doctor
Answered by Dr. Priyank Mody (2 days later)
Brief Answer:
Examination by a doctor would be the way forward

Detailed Answer:
Hello , MRI brain will rule out any grossly dilated Vessels and most importantly any benign or cancerous cause that would have caused the symptom of pulsatile tinnitus, so as we have discussed previously MRI will rule out any serious cause of pulsatile tinnitus.
In mri brain , you don't visualise the neck vessels , unless particularly it's screened for .
You need MRI neck vessel angiography ( artery plus vein) , however as I have stressed an examination by a doctor will give clues whether such an investigation is needed or not .
Subjective cause means that the reason of the symptoms is not organic and rather a increase sense of perception of nomral events of the body.
Gerd can cause both though in very rare cases , and the only means of knowing whether GERD is the reason is to rule out all causes and treat GERD and than see for the difference in symptoms .
I can fully understand the trouble you must be feeling because of pulsatile tinnitus, however online discussion furthur will only add to your anxiety and we have been discussing the rarest of cause without any objective evidence .
A examination by a local doctor and serially ruling out all causes would be ideal in your case .
Hoping I could help.
