Is It Normal To Have Blood Clots After Taking A Depo Shot?

default
Posted on Wed, 29 Jun 2016
Question: I had a myomectomy surgery back in February of this year to remove 2 large uterine fibriods. The doctor only did an ultrasound before the surgery so she missed a 3.5cm fibiod hidden in the uterine cavity during the surgery. I originally had the surgery because I was having very heavy long periods. After the surgery, I was still having heavy periods. They did an SIS and found the 3rd fibriod. My doctor then gave me the depo shot to help with the heavy periods, but I am really sick on it. It' been about 6 days. I feel awful like I want to kick a box really hard. I am very tired, anxious and I feel a little nauseous but don't throw up. Then I read that the depo shot contains an overdose of fake synthetic progesterone all at once, much more than the pill, IUD or patch. I also just had surgery, so why did my doctor give this to me. Every-time I see her, she makes me worse than before. I think she needs to lose her job. I'm very worried about my risk of getting a blood clot or having a heart attack or something on this because it is so much progesterone, synthetic all at once and by body it's handling it very well. What can I do to get it out faster? I have been drinking lots of water, prune juice and other detox methods. Help. I want this out!! And I want to know about what my options are for this remaining fibriod without another major surgery or crappy dangerous nauseating fake synthetic overdoses of hormones. I'm scared that i might get a blood clot between now and three months before it wares off. What can I do to prevent that aside from walking and wearing compression socks. I don't have any predisposition to blood clots that i know of but I did just have surgery, don't smoke but I do weigh about 207lbs. Can loseing a lot of weight shrink the fibroid she left behind and balance my hormones so I don't have to have any more pills, hormones or surgery??

Brief Answer:
You are already taking all preventive measures.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for trusting us with your health concern.
The depo shot that is given contains a large dose of synthetic progesterone but its effect is slow to onset and has a sustained effect. It is not common to have blood clots or a heart attack with it. Once the injection has been given, it cannot be taken out from the body. Increasing the fluid intake and leading a healthy lifestyle, exercise and using compression stockings will help in preventing the side effects.
To tackle the excessive bleeding due to fibroids, you can take hemostatic agents like ethamsylate or hormonal tablets. Surgery is the only permanent treatment for fibroids.
Please feel free to discuss further. I will be glad to answer the follow up queries that you have.
Wishing you good health.

Can you please explain to me how the effect of the depo is slow? Does it stay stored in fat to be released slowly over time, if so how much are you getting daily? Is it more than say IUD or minipill?

If it is not common to have a blood clot or heart attack from it, what are the statistics of this for someone who just had surgery 3 months ago? I feel like taking the shot was too risky after surgery. Is this correct?

If I want to not take depo or hormones or drugs to stop my heavy bleeding problem due to the remaining fibriod, would I be able to have an ablation or do something else besides have another myomectomy?

Brief Answer:
Depo is released slowly.

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
Thanks for writing again.
Depo is stored in fat and is released slowly into the body. Its daily dose is not more than that of a minipill. The chances of having a blood clot or heart attack are less than 5%. So it is not much to worry.
Ablation is another option for you to decrease the bleeding but it can affect your chances of future conception. You can discuss the options depending on the amount of bleeding with your gynecologist.
Hope my answer is helpful.

Hello Dr. Tayal,

Thank you so much for helping me understand. I feel better already. Is it still 5% even after having surgery?

My uterus is still very enlarged even after removing 2 of the larger of the 3 fibroids that I had, the largest two were removed. Will it ever go down or will it always be enlarged? It has been 3 months, is it still swollen from the surgery? Also so I still feel a little pain still from the surgery when the uterus was sewn back together? It seems like it is taking a long time to heal and I don't know if it's because she left the fibroid in the cavity.

I appreciate it so much, and will leave you a good review.

Thanks,

M

Brief Answer:
Details below.

Detailed Answer:
Even after the surgery the chances of blood clot are low as it has been more than three months since you had surgery. The enlargement of uterus can be due to left over fibroid or due to a local swelling. It can reduce a little with time but not much. The little pain due to surgical stitches will gradually subside.
The left over fibroid is not likely to be related to the pain that you are having.
Regards.
