Is It Necessary To Have Hysterectomy For Uterine Prolapse?

default
Posted on Wed, 17 Jun 2015
Question: I am trying to decide to have a hysterectomy or do nothing at this time. I am 67 and have prolapse uterus. It has dropped to the opening of my vagina. I did not want to try the pessary. I do have a lower back ache, and constipation frequently. I have only leaked a few times over the year. My doctor suggested I go with total hysterectomy, but I am hesitant to undergo surgery unless I really need it. At this time I am in good health, so I think I should go with surgery now instead of when I am older. But at the same time, it is something I can live with if it stays as it is.

Brief Answer:
Get hysterectomy done

Detailed Answer:
Hello mam, thanks for trusting health care magic.
You need to get hysterectomy done as soon as convenient for you.
Prolapse uterus is basically due to age related senile atrophy of the supports of uterus and vagina and also is only going to increase with the passage of time.
There are several reasons for you to decide about it as soon as possible viz -
- with increasing age surgical risk increases and risk of anaesthesia is more too
- at times there can occur incarceration of the uterus due to edema and then you will need emergency hysterectomy which itself is a difficult surgery
- it will definitely increase with time and also give way to other problems like frequent urinary incontinence and urinary tract infections
- and with increasing prolapse the dependent portion of the prolapsed part can have decubitus ulcers and also can become precancerous if uncared for a long time.
So get it operated and don't hesitate and put it on hold.
In case you have any other questions, I will be glad to answer.
