Is It Necessary To Have I Pill Post Unprotected Sex?

default
Posted on Wed, 13 May 2015
Question: Hi,
I had unprotected sex with my GF on 19th night. Gave her i pill the next morning, 20th, at 10 am within 10 hours.
Though on 22ng morning at 7 am i again had unprotected sex with her.
Could there be a chance of pregnancy?
Should i give her another i pill.
Please advice, i am really worried.

Brief Answer:
Negligible chance..Need not worry

Hello XXXXXXX

Thanks for asking to healthcaremagic.

I have gone through your query carefully and understood your concern.

1)Is her menstrual cycle regular ?
2)When was her LMP(last menstrual period) ?

You can give her another dose but i don't think there's a need for it.Because the second sexual encounter has occured within the stipulated time of drug's action.

But still pregnancy cannot be ruled out 100% for sure until she get her regular period.

Hope this answers your query.Further queries are welcome..

There is one more point to add.
She had used i-pill on 15th morning as well and later got a slight blood discharge the following evening and the next day.
However when she took the i-pill on 19th again, there was no discharge this time.
Is this a major concern and would she be pregnant?
Her periods are regular, don't know the exact dates, its probably 27th.

What should be done now?
Please help.

Hello again

Thanks for following up.

Spotting(slight bleed) may or may not occur with the ipill. But in her scenario i need the answers for below questions to opine better.

1) Was any sexual encounter before 15th ??

2) Why she took the ipill on 15th ??

With the given information,i provide my opinion and suggestions below..

She can wait for her regular period to occur on whatever day like you said on 27th..

Home pregnancy test is needed once she misses her regular period i.e on 27th(as you said) and a repeat test every week would be needed until she menstruates or pregnancy is ruled out by other tests..

But better option would be to do a blood HCG level test which can rule out possible early stage pregnancies than waiting for home pregnancy tests..

A expert gynecologist would be well aware of the above mentioned procedures and its advisable to act accordingly..

Hope this answers your query.Though you can update me with the answers to suggest better.

Answers:
1. Yes we had an encounter on 14th morning.
2. To avoid risk of pregnancy pill was taken on 15th.
There was blood discharge, not heavy like periods but slight amount, that evening and for next 1-2 days.

Few queries:
a. No discharge after pill taken on 20th morning, why so?
b. Did effect of pill on 15th stay and the pill taken on 20th would have effect on the encounter on 22nd?
c. How long the pill has effect after taken?
d. Another pill is required?

Can she still be pregnant? Please help.

Brief Answer:
Still negligible chance..Need not worry..

Detailed Answer:
Hello XXXXXXX

Thanks for following up with the required information..

The answers for your queries below :

a)No discharge on or after 20th after consuming ipill -->Normal..It is what we expect with the drug i.e only to prevent possible conception and not to cause spotting/bleeding..

Other possibilities but not limited to : May be related to the combined effect of the ipills which she had taken on 15th and on 19th (or) may be related to a possible conception due to encounter prior to 15th(though this is very very rare)..

In all the above said cases,spotting/slight bleeding is very unlikely..This is because of the persistent availability of the progesterone(also called pregnancy hormone),which could have stabilized the inner lining of the uterus and prevent it from spotting/bleeding..

b) Pill on 15th might also have stayed..But most likely the ipill on 20th will have significant effect in preventing the possible conception due to encounter on 22nd..

c)More effective and better results if taken within 72 hrs of unprotected intercourse..But due to its increased half life elimination, the drug still can be effective after 4 to 5 days..

d)No need for another pill at the moment..

Please note : No contraceptive is 100% percent effective in preventing a possible conception. So i can't still rule out pregnancy for sure..

Stay calm..You need not be worried until she is proven to be pregnant.

I would request you to follow the guidelines mentioned in the previous follow up query..

Hope i have answered your queries..You may update me anytime..
